Ruan de Oliveira was born on June 25, 1992, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His path to Brazilian jiu-jitsu was shaped as much by chance as by curiosity. As a child, he sampled capoeira at age 7 and judo at age 10, though neither discipline held his attention long enough to pursue seriously.

His introduction to BJJ arrived at age 13 through a fortuitous encounter. When the computer at his father's store broke down, an IT expert named João arrived to repair it — kimono bundled under his arm, wrapped in his brown belt, en route to jiu-jitsu practice. Ruan had cousins who trained but had never seen the art up close. Curiosity piqued, he asked João to bring him along to observe a class. That Wednesday, João took him to Gávea Gym, and the impression was immediate and lasting. By the following Monday, Ruan had a gi in hand and was on the mats as a student.

His first instructor at Gávea Gym was Igor Silva, who ran the afternoon training sessions. Not long after Ruan began training, Múzio de Angelis took over the academy and became the defining figure of his formative years — ultimately awarding every one of Ruan's belts through brown belt.

Colored Belt Success and a New Training Circle

Ruan de Oliveira's progression under Múzio de Angelis at Gávea Gym produced a decorated colored belt record, highlighted by gold at the CBJJ Brazilian National Championship at blue belt in 2010 and multiple Rio de Janeiro state championship titles. The environment at Soul Fighters tested Ruan immediately. The level of competition on the mats surpassed anything he had encountered before, and early sessions were extremely difficult to navigate. His school schedule complicated matters further, preventing a full-time commitment without abandoning Gávea Gym. For roughly a year, he attended the Tijuca academy only sporadically — more consistently during school holidays than during regular term.

The situation resolved through a candid conversation with Múzio de Angelis, who helped Ruan recognize that a full commitment to Soul Fighters was necessary to compete at the sport's highest levels. Ruan made the move, and under the guidance of Leandro 'Tatu' Escobar, his competition game continued to sharpen. He maintained his coaching duties at Múzio de Angelis' academy throughout this period, honoring both his loyalty to his original home and his ambitions as a competitor.

The Brown Belt Years and Black Belt Promotion

The arc of Ruan's brown belt years — 2014 to 2015 — stands as the most decorated chapter of his pre-black belt career. He claimed gold at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals and the IBJJF Rio BJJ Pro, bronze at the UAEJJF Abu Dhabi World Pro, and reached the final of the IBJJF World Jiu-Jitsu Championship, earning silver. That runner-up finish at the Worlds served as the catalyst for his promotion: on July 4, 2015, Múzio de Angelis and Leandro Escobar stood together at Gávea Gym — the place where Ruan's journey had begun — and jointly awarded him his black belt, a ceremony that acknowledged both mentors who had shaped him.

Division and Representation

As a black belt, Ruan de Oliveira competes in the Meio Pesado division (88kg / 194lbs) representing Soul Fighters, carrying forward the technical foundation built across two academies and under two coaches. His black belt record reflects consistent presence at the upper levels of both the IBJJF and UAEJJF circuits.

Among his podium appearances, Ruan claimed gold at the FJJR Rio State Championship, the BJJ Tour in 2014, and the Copa Podio Trials in 2019.
