Nivaldo Oliveira

Nivaldo Oliveira was born on May 10, 1983, in Guarujá, a coastal city in São Paulo State, Brazil. Growing up beside the ocean shaped two defining passions — surfing and martial arts — both of which he has carried throughout his life. Oliveira stepped onto the mats for the first time at age 16, beginning his BJJ journey at the Integração academy under Sergio Souza. A formative mentor, Souza guided Oliveira through the foundational stages of his development, coaching him all the way to purple belt. The technical discipline forged during those early years in Guarujá laid the groundwork for a career that would ultimately reach the sport's highest levels.

After earning his purple belt under Sergio Souza, Oliveira made the move to a more competitive training environment under Leonardo Vieira — a transition that accelerated his development considerably. Sharpened by the elevated competition within the academy, his results on the circuit quickly reflected the upgrade. In 2004, Oliveira claimed the CBJJ Brazilian National Championship at purple belt, announcing himself as a consistent podium presence across belt levels.

The peak of his colored belt career arrived in 2007, when Oliveira captured both the IBJJF World Championship and the CBJJE World Cup as a brown belt — two of the most prestigious titles available at that stage. The magnitude of those accomplishments carried immediate consequences for his rank: Leo Vieira awarded Oliveira his black belt as a direct reward for winning world titles at brown belt. It was a graduation his results had already earned.

As a black belt, Nivaldo Oliveira built his competitive base at Checkmat – Santos, training alongside world champions including Michelle Nicolini, Marcus Buchecha, and Rodrigo Cavaca. Under Cavaca's coaching, Oliveira developed into one of the defining medium heavyweight (Meio Pesado) competitors of his generation — technically precise, competitively intense, and consistently dangerous at the highest levels.

His black belt record features victories over some of the most respected names in the sport. Wins over Leandro Lo, Augusto Ferrari, and Leonardo Nogueira affirmed his ability to compete across both the Meio Pesado and Pesado divisions against elite opposition. Accumulating titles through CBJJE, CBJJ, IBJJF, and UAEJJF events throughout his black belt career, Oliveira demonstrated both consistency and adaptability across competitive formats. In 2018, he added the IBJJF Masters World Championship in the Master 1 division to his record — a title that confirmed the enduring quality of his jiu-jitsu well into the later stages of his competitive career.

Oliveira's impact extends well beyond his competition record. He became the first black belt to coach BJJ in Palau, placing him among the pioneers responsible for introducing the sport to regions where it had not previously taken root. That willingness to carry jiu-jitsu beyond established markets speaks to a commitment to the art that transcends personal achievement.

Back in Guarujá, Oliveira coaches at the Vert Club — returning his expertise to the community where his own journey began. The setting reflects the balance that defines his life: a space where jiu-jitsu instruction coexists with his enduring passion for surfing, both rooted in the same coastal environment that shaped him. His return to coach in the city where he first stepped onto the mats represents a full-circle investment in the next generation of practitioners.
