Diogo 'Moreno' Sampaio Araújo was born on April 30, 1984, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil — a city where Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is woven into the fabric of everyday life. His path to the mats traces back to a deeply personal source of inspiration: his father, a passionate admirer of BJJ who never found the opportunity to train himself. Rather than let that dream go unfulfilled in his own household, Diogo's father channeled his enthusiasm into encouraging his son, planting the seed for a lifelong commitment to the sport.

Diogo began his BJJ journey under Professor Munir at a gym in Vila da Penha, the Rio de Janeiro suburb where he grew up. Those early years on the mats introduced him to the discipline and technical depth that define high-level Jiu-Jitsu, laying the foundation for everything that would follow.

A pivotal transition in Diogo Araújo's development came when he moved from Vila da Penha to train under Master Marcos Carvalho. Carvalho's academy proved to be far more than a training ground — it became the incubator for what would grow into one of Brazil's most celebrated competitive teams. Training alongside Diogo during this period were athletes who would go on to define the Soul Fighters organization, including Bruno Malfacine ('Tanque'), Augusto Mendes ('Tanquinho'), and Rafael Formiga.

Master Carvalho guided Diogo through his early belt promotions, awarding him both his blue and purple belts and establishing the technical backbone of his competitive game. As Soul Fighters solidified as a formal team and Augusto Mendes assumed greater responsibility for instruction and grading, it was Tanquinho who guided Diogo through the final stages of his belt journey — awarding him both his brown belt and, in one of the most memorable moments of his career, his black belt.

That black belt promotion took place in 2010 in one of the most symbolic ways imaginable: Diogo received his promotion while standing on the podium after winning the Rio Open at brown belt. The ceremony on the competition stage captured the close-knit spirit that defined Soul Fighters' early culture — a team built not through institutional formality, but through shared training, mutual trust, and collective achievement.

Brown Belt Excellence and the Road to Black

Diogo Araújo's competitive record reflects sustained excellence across multiple years and belt levels. His 2010 brown belt campaign stands out as particularly remarkable — he earned podium finishes at the FJJR Rio de Janeiro State Championship and the IBJJF Pan Championship, where he placed second, before closing the year with victory at the IBJJF Rio International Open. That result earned him his on-the-spot black belt promotion, a fitting culmination to a dominant season.

Black Belt Results and a World Championship Final

The transition to black belt competition produced immediate results. In 2011, Diogo captured the IBJJF Rio International Open title once again — this time as a black belt — validating the quality and speed of his development. Competing in the Pesado division (94kg/207lbs), he established himself as a serious threat at the sport's highest levels, a reputation most dramatically confirmed at the IBJJF World Championship in 2012, where he advanced to the final and finished as runner-up, the peak result of his Worlds career.

State Dominance and Continued Longevity

Diogo also earned multiple FJJR Rio de Janeiro State titles, with championships recorded in 2003, 2009, and 2010 — a consistency in his home state spanning nearly a decade. His longevity as a competitor was further underscored by a third-place finish at the IBJJF Pan No-Gi Championship in 2018, a result that speaks to his enduring dedication to the sport well beyond his most celebrated years on the circuit.

Following his establishment as an elite competitor, Diogo Araújo invested significantly in developing the next generation of BJJ practitioners. For an extended period, he served as an instructor at the Evidence Academy in Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, working alongside his close friend Mario Vitor.
