Mauricio Oliveira

Maurício Oliveira Neto was born on October 24, 1997, in Salvador, the capital of Bahia in northeastern Brazil. Raised in the São Caetano neighborhood — one of Salvador's more impoverished districts — Oliveira grew up surrounded by street violence, channeling his energy into street soccer as an escape from a harsh environment. That same environment ultimately redirected his life: at 14, his brother-in-law urged him to try jiu-jitsu as a practical means of self-defense, setting everything that followed in motion.

His first instructor, Coach Zé Carlos, offered free BJJ classes at a local community association — a generous arrangement that, though short-lived, laid a meaningful foundation. When Zé Carlos was forced to close the project after only a few months, Oliveira transitioned seamlessly to training under Sinho Baiano, Zé Carlos' own instructor, and spent more than a year developing under his guidance. It was during this period that Grimaldo Oliveira, a prominent Salvador instructor and regional representative of GF Team, took notice. Recognizing exceptional potential in the teenager, Grimaldo extended an invitation that would fundamentally alter the course of Maurício's career.

At 16 years old, Maurício Oliveira accepted Grimaldo Oliveira's invitation to train at the GF Team headquarters in Rio de Janeiro. Convincing a protective mother to allow her teenage son to relocate required Grimaldo's personal involvement — and he delivered. Oliveira arrived in Rio as a blue belt and spent the next three years in an environment that few athletes ever access.

Living full-time at the GFT academy, Oliveira and his fellow students occupied a room above the mats they affectionately nicknamed "Cachanga." The setup offered something invaluable: total immersion in jiu-jitsu, training under the direct guidance of Júlio César Pereira around the clock. The results were historic. Oliveira captured the IBJJF World Championship at blue belt in 2016, followed by gold at purple belt in 2017, and completed a landmark run by claiming the brown belt world title in 2018 — three consecutive IBJJF World titles across three different belt levels. He also added the IBJJF Pan Championship at brown belt in 2018 to that exceptional run.

In June 2018, following his third consecutive world title, Júlio César Pereira promoted Maurício Oliveira Neto to black belt — a recognition that marked both the culmination of the "Cachanga" years and the opening of a demanding new competitive chapter.

Oliveira's path to the United States was built on a friendship forged on the mats of Salvador. Gutemberg Pereira, a longtime training partner who had shared both the Salvador gyms and the GF Team flag with Oliveira, relocated to Ohio in 2016. In 2017, Pereira invited Oliveira to visit and train at the GF Team Ohio camp — his first experience in the country. What began as a visit evolved into a lasting commitment, and Oliveira became a regular representative of the Ohio-based chapter of GF Team.

His black belt career confirmed that his colored belt dominance was no anomaly. In 2019, Oliveira claimed gold at the AJP Grand Slam in Los Angeles. In 2021, he added another AJP Grand Slam title in Abu Dhabi alongside the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals crown. He reached the podium at the BJJ Stars Grand Prix in 2022 and the IBJJF South American Championship in 2023. In 2024, Oliveira captured the 2024 IBJJF European Championship, further cementing his standing among the elite competitors in the Meio Pesado division.

After returning to Brazil in 2020, Maurício Oliveira Neto made a significant shift in competitive affiliation, parting ways with GF Team — the organization that had shaped his development from teenager to world champion — and joining Dream Art, the São Paulo-based team recognized as one of Brazil's premier competitive academies. The transition closed a chapter that had defined his formative years across Salvador, Rio de Janeiro, and Ohio, and opened a new competitive identity built on an already formidable record.

Under the Dream Art banner, Oliveira continues to perform at the highest levels of international competition, adding major titles and podium finishes across multiple prestigious circuits. The move reflects a natural evolution for a competitor whose ambitions extend well beyond the accomplishments already etched into his career, and he represents Brazil internationally as a member of the Dream Art organization.
