Leonardo Silva

Leonardo Silva Guimarães was born on May 6, 1994, in Itaboraí, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He first stepped onto the mats at age 7 through tae kwon do, beginning a martial arts journey that would define his competitive identity. Coming of age during the golden era of Brazilian MMA in the early 2000s, Silva was captivated by the sight of Brazilian fighters competing at the sport's highest levels — an inspiration that pushed him to pursue combat sports with increasing seriousness.

Rather than committing to a single discipline, Silva explored multiple arts during his formative years. He transitioned from tae kwon do into muay Thai, drawn by its technical demands and striking intensity. At age 16, he discovered Brazilian jiu-jitsu — a turning point that would ultimately anchor his athletic career. The striking foundation he built across multiple disciplines gave him a well-rounded athleticism and a competitor's instinct that he carried directly onto the grappling mats.

Leonardo Silva's path to the black belt took him through a range of training environments, each contributing to his technical development and competitive outlook. During his formative years, he trained at the historic Gracie Humaitá, one of the most storied institutions in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. That early exposure helped him build a broad technical base before he found his long-term competitive home.

Silva eventually established himself within GF Team, training under the direct guidance of Master Julio César Pereira. The GF Team environment sharpened his consistency on the IBJJF circuit and gave him access to a high-level competitive culture. A defining chapter of his development came through his time at the famed 'Cachanga' fighter house — a dedicated training environment known for forging elite competitors. Immersed in that culture of disciplined preparation, Silva refined both his technical game and his competitive mentality. During this period, he also trained under Luiz Branca, known within the community as Mestre Branca, whose coaching contributed meaningfully to his technical growth.

In August 2019, Gutemberg Pereira and Dante Leon promoted Silva to black belt — a milestone that reflected the consistency and technical maturity he had demonstrated across years of competition at the purple and brown belt levels.

Leonardo Silva competed in the Peso Leve division (76 kg / 168 lbs) and built his reputation through sustained performances across the IBJJF circuit. His results at multiple belt levels and in multiple geographic regions established him as one of GF Team's more reliable international representatives on the podium.

Purple Belt Foundations

At purple belt, Silva signaled his competitive potential with a first-place finish at the IBJJF Rio BJJ Pro in 2016, followed by a gold medal at the IBJJF Brazilian Team Nationals in 2017. Those results demonstrated his ability to perform across both open-format and team-format events within the Brazilian domestic circuit.

Brown Belt Breakthrough

The brown belt years marked the most prominent stretch of his pre-black-belt career. In 2018, Silva reached the final of the IBJJF World Championship — one of the most competitive events in the sport — finishing as runner-up in the Peso Leve division. That result placed him among the top competitors in his weight class globally at that belt level. He also earned podium finishes at the IBJJF Pan Championship in both 2018 and 2019, reflecting his consistency at major championship events across multiple seasons.

During the 2019 brown belt season, Silva extended his competitive footprint into the North American IBJJF open circuit, collecting gold medals at the IBJJF Washington DC Spring Open, the IBJJF New York Fall Open, and the IBJJF Cincinnati Open.
