Daniel Diniz was born on August 24, 1997, in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil. His path to professional jiu-jitsu began through a pivotal family connection: at age 12, his cousin André Santos, a black belt, introduced him to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. That early mentorship provided Daniel with a technical foundation and competitive mindset that many aspiring grapplers spend years trying to acquire on their own.

At age 13, Daniel relocated with his family to Brasília, a move that reshaped his training environment and ultimately accelerated his development. When André Santos later moved to the United States, Daniel was left to forge new coaching relationships in the capital — but the groundwork André had laid proved solid enough to sustain his continued growth and fuel his ambitions on the competitive circuit.

Daniel Diniz's ascent through the belt ranks reflects a methodical progression built on strong coaching relationships and a consistent appetite for competition. In Brasília, he trained under coaches Diego and Tiago Pereira, earning his blue belt under their guidance and sharpening the technical instincts that would define his game at higher levels.

Colored Belt Development and Checkmat

Daniel's trajectory took a decisive turn when he joined Checkmat and came under the mentorship of Pedro Franzosi, who guided him through the purple and brown belt stages. Leonardo Vieira also contributed meaningfully to his preparation during this period, reinforcing the well-rounded approach that characterized his rise.

His colored belt results spoke for themselves. Daniel claimed back-to-back gold medals at the IBJJF South American Championships in 2018 and 2019 at brown belt, back-to-back titles that confirmed his standing among the most competitive grapplers of his generation. He followed those performances with a runner-up finish at the IBJJF Pan Championship in 2020, reaching the final of one of the most prestigious colored belt events on the calendar.

Black Belt Promotion Under Lucas Leite

After completing his university degree in 2019, Daniel made a deliberate move to the United States to pursue jiu-jitsu at the professional level, training at Checkmat academies in La Habra and Signal Hill under Lucas Leite. The relocation signaled a full commitment to competing on the world stage. In November 2020, Lucas Leite promoted Daniel to black belt — formalizing a coaching relationship that had become central to his athletic identity and competitive ambitions.

Daniel Diniz competes in the Peso Pena division at 70 kg (154.5 lbs), a weight class that rewards technical precision, explosive speed, and sharp conditioning. Though born in Brazil, he represents the United States on the international circuit — a direct reflection of the commitment he made when he relocated to pursue professional competition.

His early black belt results demonstrated a smooth transition from decorated colored belt contender to credible elite-level competitor. In 2021, Daniel earned a runner-up finish at the IBJJF American Nationals, placing him among the top featherweights in the country. That same year, he added a third-place finish at the IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu CON, further solidifying his presence on the black belt circuit.
