Kristian Woodmansee

Born on November 3, 1987, in Marlton, New Jersey, Kristian Woodmansee would go on to become one of the most accomplished rooster-weight competitors of his generation. His path to jiu-jitsu began later than most elite athletes in the sport — he first stepped onto the mats at the age of 20 at Balance Studios in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, under the instruction of Shaun Smith. Far from a disadvantage, that late start makes his subsequent rise to the top of the rooster-weight division all the more remarkable. Relocating to Philadelphia to pursue jiu-jitsu seriously, Woodmansee demonstrated from the outset a level of commitment that would define his entire career.

After earning his blue belt at Balance Studios, Woodmansee sought a more competitive training environment and joined Team Lloyd Irvin, where he trained alongside notable grapplers including Jared Weiner, Wilson Reis, and JT Torres. The experience sharpened his competitive edge and laid the foundation for his development as a serious tournament athlete.

As a purple belt, Woodmansee continued his cross-country pursuit of elite instruction, relocating to Miami to train under Roberto Abreu — known widely as "Cyborg" — before moving to Las Vegas to affiliate with Drysdale Jiu Jitsu under Robert Drysdale. The partnership with Drysdale proved pivotal: in 2012, Drysdale promoted Woodmansee to brown belt, recognizing both his technical growth and his consistent competitive results. Notably, even during his purple belt years, Woodmansee had already begun coaching, revealing an early passion for instruction and leadership on the mats.

In 2014, Woodmansee moved to San Diego to join Atos Jiu-Jitsu under André Galvão, completing a transcontinental journey through some of BJJ's most respected academies. His time at Atos culminated in December 2016, when Galvão promoted him to black belt — a formal recognition of a decade of relentless pursuit across multiple coasts and training environments.

Competing at Peso Galo (57.5 kg / 127 lbs), one of the most physically demanding weight classes in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Woodmansee earned the nickname "Dream Killer" — a fitting moniker for a competitor who built his reputation by defeating favored opponents in the lower weight divisions. His career spanned multiple rulesets, including IBJJF, EBI (Eddie Bravo Invitational), and ADCC trials, reflecting both his versatility and his appetite for high-level competition.

Brown Belt Dominance

Woodmansee's brown belt no-gi record stands among the most impressive of his career. He captured gold at the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship in 2013 and won the IBJJF Pans No-Gi Championship in 2012, adding further titles at the IBJJF European No-Gi Open and the IBJJF Rome Open in 2015 alongside a string of consistent podium finishes across North American and European IBJJF events. These results, accumulated while representing Team Lloyd Irvin, Drysdale Jiu Jitsu, and Atos Jiu-Jitsu, cemented his status as a premier competitor long before his black belt promotion.

Black Belt Validation

At black belt, Woodmansee continued to perform at the highest levels of competition. He claimed gold at the 2018 IBJJF Pan No-Gi Championship and earned a bronze medal at the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship that same year — results that validated his standing among the elite of the rooster-weight division.

In 2016, Woodmansee balanced his active competition schedule with a new role as a grappling coach in Michigan, broadening his impact beyond the tournament circuit. During this period, he also prepared for and made his professional MMA debut, demonstrating the natural crossover between elite BJJ and mixed martial arts. This chapter illustrated both his adaptability and his willingness to test himself across disciplines. The year 2016 proved to be a landmark one — it was the same year that André Galvão awarded him his black belt in December, marking the formal completion of a journey that had taken him from a beginner's class in Philadelphia to the upper echelons of professional grappling.

After years of training and competing across the United States, Woodmansee returned to Philadelphia with his wife to start a family and establish permanent roots in the city where his jiu-jitsu journey began. His return carried a clear professional vision alongside it. He became part-owner of an existing academy before eventually assuming full ownership — a transition that led to the creation of Logic Academy.

The Academy

Woodmansee co-runs Logic Academy alongside business partner Morgan Huang, operating a 10,000 square foot facility in Philadelphia's Fishtown/Northern Liberties neighborhood at Billy Penn Studios, 1516 N 5th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19122. Designed to accommodate up to 600 active members, the mat space stands as one of the more substantial BJJ facilities in the region. The academy maintains its affiliation with Atos Jiu-Jitsu, preserving Woodmansee's longstanding connection to André Galvão's organization.

Mission and Vision

The mission at Logic Academy centers on making world-class instruction accessible to students of all skill levels — a philosophy shaped directly by Woodmansee's own experience learning across some of the sport's most demanding environments. Woodmansee has expressed plans to expand the academy's footprint and launch an after-school program, extending the reach of jiu-jitsu into youth development within the Philadelphia community.
