Eduardo Barboza was born on July 11, 1992, in Belford Roxo, a city in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. As a child, he battled bronchitis and carried an introverted temperament — circumstances that quietly set the stage for his entry into martial arts. Recognizing the need to address both his son's physical health and social development, Eduardo's father enrolled him in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at age 14. From the start, the sport served a dual purpose: strengthening his respiratory health while building personal confidence and social resilience.

His first instructor, Júlio César Almeida, taught Eduardo in Belford Roxo and laid the technical and philosophical groundwork for what would become a distinguished competitive career. Those formative years on the mats proved transformative, shaping a quiet, health-challenged teenager into a dedicated practitioner with ambitions that would carry him far beyond his hometown.

As a purple belt, Eduardo Barboza made a pivotal decision to join GF Team, one of Rio de Janeiro's most prominent academies. The move accelerated his development and brought him to the attention of the international BJJ community. The competitive environment and high-level training at GF Team sharpened his technical game and prepared him for elite IBJJF competition.

The results came swiftly. In 2014, Barboza captured the IBJJF World Championship title at purple belt, establishing himself as one of the most dangerous competitors in his weight class. He sustained that momentum through his brown belt years, claiming runner-up finishes at the IBJJF World Championship in 2015 and the IBJJF Pan American Championship in 2016 — a consistency few athletes maintain across multiple belt levels.

In April 2016, a severe hand injury required surgery and forced Barboza to withdraw from a significant portion of that year's competitive schedule. The setback tested his resilience at a critical point in his career. He recovered and returned to competition, and on September 21, 2016, Júlio César Pereira — who had also awarded Eduardo his brown belt — promoted him to black belt, recognizing both his technical mastery and his resolve through adversity.

Eduardo Barboza competes in the Peso Galo division — known internationally as Rooster Weight, capped at 57kg/127lbs — one of the most technically demanding categories in competitive BJJ. Shortly after receiving his black belt in September 2016, Eduardo Barboza relocated to Houston, Texas, where he joined a GF Team affiliate as an instructor. The move marked a meaningful evolution in his BJJ journey — from elite competitor to educator — and extended GF Team's methodology to students in the United States.
