Sam McNally's path to becoming one of Ireland's most accomplished grapplers did not begin with a lifelong dedication to sport. Growing up in the Republic of Ireland, McNally showed little interest in competitive athletics as a child — until his secondary school introduced judo as part of its sports curriculum. That unusual offering exposed him to the fundamentals of grappling and ignited a curiosity that nothing else had.

The experience proved formative. Motivated to pursue martial arts beyond the classroom, McNally sought out a grappling discipline he could train in seriously — and jiu-jitsu captured his attention. At 16, he walked into the Dublin academy run by Darragh O'Conaill, a school that would grow into East Coast Jiu-Jitsu Academy — today regarded as one of the most respected grappling institutions in Europe.

McNally's entire development as a martial artist took place within the East Coast Jiu-Jitsu Academy environment, advancing from white belt through every rank under the consistent mentorship of Darragh O'Conaill. As the academy grew in stature and competitive reach, it provided McNally with both the coaching infrastructure and the international exposure necessary to sharpen his game at the highest level.

The years leading into his black belt promotion were among his most productive as a competitor. Competing at brown belt in 2019, McNally assembled a remarkable run of results across multiple circuits — claiming gold at the IBJJF Ireland Nationals, the AJP British National Pro, and the AJP Spain National Pro. A third-place finish at the 2019 IBJJF Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship further underscored his readiness for the sport's senior rank, demonstrating his capacity to perform against elite international opposition before crossing that threshold. On June 29, 2019, Darragh O'Conaill awarded McNally his black belt, formalizing a journey that had begun more than a decade earlier with a judo class in a Dublin secondary school.

McNally entered black belt competition without missing a step. A gold medal at the IBJJF London Fall Open in 2019 signaled his intent at the sport's senior level, and the years that followed confirmed it. Competing in the Peso Pena division — the 70 kg / 154.5 lbs weight class — McNally established himself in 2022 as one of the standout performers in his weight category on the global circuit.

Defining Season: 2022

The 2022 season marked a turning point in McNally's career. At the IBJJF European Open — one of the most competitive events on the annual calendar — he claimed a bronze medal, holding his own against the division's elite. He followed that with a dominant gold medal performance at the IBJJF Dublin Open before delivering the result that drew widespread international attention: victory at the ADCC European Trials in 2022.

That win earned McNally qualification for the ADCC World Championships — the most prestigious submission grappling event in the sport — and firmly announced him as a genuine contender at the highest level. Competing under the East Coast Jiu-Jitsu Academy banner and representing the Republic of Ireland, McNally's rise reflects both the depth of his own development and the growing force of Irish grappling on the world stage.
