Rolles Gracie was born on July 14, 1978, in Brazil, the son of Rolls Gracie — one of the most technically innovative and widely respected figures in BJJ history. From birth, Rolles stood at the heart of the art's founding lineage, introduced to jiu-jitsu through both his father and his grandfather, Carlos Gracie, one of the original architects of the Gracie martial arts system.

Known by the nicknames Rollezinho — meaning "little Rolls" — and Rolls Junior, Rolles carried an unmistakable connection to his father's identity from an early age. That legacy, however, was marked by profound personal tragedy. On June 6, 1982, Rolls Gracie died, leaving a void not only within the BJJ community — which had lost one of its most gifted technical minds — but also in Rolles's personal life. Still a young child at the time of his father's passing, Rolles stepped away from training during what would prove to be a formative period of his development.

After more than a decade away from jiu-jitsu, Rolles returned to the mats in 1996 with the guidance of his uncle, Rilion Gracie. The return proved immediately fruitful — that same year, Rolles competed at the Brazilian National Championship as a blue belt, signaling the seriousness of his recommitment to the art.

In 1998, Rolles relocated to Boca Raton, Florida, where the relative scarcity of BJJ schools led him to pursue Judo as a complementary grappling discipline. Rather than allowing the lack of BJJ infrastructure to stall his development, he used the period to build a broader grappling base — an experience that would later inform both his ground game and his transition to mixed martial arts.

Rolles returned to Rio de Janeiro in 1999 to train under Carlos Gracie Jr. (Carlinhos Gracie), pursuing BJJ with renewed focus and intensity. His progression through the ranks was rapid: that year, he earned a second Brazilian National Championship result at purple belt, demonstrating the speed of his advancement since returning to competition. In 2000, he added a Brazilian National Teams Championship title to his record, reinforcing his standing as a credible competitor in team-format events. It was under Carlinhos Gracie's guidance that Rolles ultimately received his black belt — completing a journey set in motion by his father's influence years before.

In 2004, Rolles relocated to New York City, where he began training and working alongside his cousin Renzo Gracie at Renzo Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. The partnership deepened his technical development and embedded him further within the extended Gracie network operating out of one of North America's most prominent BJJ academies.

The New York period produced meaningful competitive results. In 2005, Rolles won the Grapplers Quest Championship, establishing himself as a legitimate force in the super heavyweight division on the North American grappling circuit. Three years later, in 2008, he competed at the Pan American No-Gi Championship and finished as runner-up — a strong performance at an elite no-gi event that underscored his continued relevance at the top level of submission grappling. His Gracie pedigree, combined with his super heavyweight physicality and well-rounded grappling background, made him a recognizable and respected presence throughout this competitive period.

Rolles Gracie launched his mixed martial arts career in 2007 under the banner of the IFL (International Fight League), leveraging his elite grappling foundation as the cornerstone of his fighting approach. The transition to MMA represented a natural progression for a competitor whose athletic identity had been built entirely around submission grappling and physical dominance on the ground.

In 2009, Rolles made a significant structural addition to his training by joining Greg Jackson's renowned MMA camp in Albuquerque, New Mexico. From that point, he split his preparation between Albuquerque and New York City — a dual-camp arrangement that paired Renzo Gracie's BJJ-centric environment with the strategically sophisticated, multi-disciplinary system that the Jackson camp had become known for producing. This combination reflected a high-level approach to building a complete MMA skill set on top of an already elite grappling base. Rolles eventually competed in the UFC, marking a career milestone as a member of the Gracie family performing on the world's premier MMA stage.

On January 2, 2010, Rolles Gracie promoted UFC fighter and decorated wrestling standout Rashad Evans to the rank of no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt — a decision that immediately ignited significant debate within the BJJ community. Evans, while widely recognized as an elite wrestler and high-level MMA competitor, had not followed the traditional gi-based BJJ curriculum that the overwhelming majority of practitioners associate with the belt promotion process.

The controversy drew scrutiny from across the grappling world, raising pointed questions about the standards being applied and the credibility of the promotion. Rolles was deliberate in framing his defense around a central distinction: Evans had received a no-gi black belt, not a traditional gi black belt. This clarification anchored his public response to the criticism, with Rolles arguing that Evans's submission grappling ability and technical proficiency without the gi constituted black belt-level competence on those specific terms — even in the absence of a traditional gi-based training history.
