Juan Caio Kamezawa

Born on January 13, 1988, in Brazil, Juan Caio Kamezawa carries a dual Brazilian-Japanese heritage that shaped both his identity and the geography of his martial arts development. His earliest exposure to combat sports came through Capoeira, which he began practicing at eight years old — building a foundation of body awareness, rhythm, and spatial intelligence that would later translate fluidly to the grappling mats.

The pivotal moment in Kamezawa's athletic trajectory arrived at sixteen, when watching Rodrigo 'Minotauro' Nogueira compete in Pride FC ignited a deep passion for Jiu-Jitsu. Minotauro's ability to survive catastrophic positions and manufacture submissions from beneath opponents captured Kamezawa's imagination and redirected his path entirely. What followed was a natural convergence of heritage and purpose — it would be Japan, not Brazil, where his Jiu-Jitsu story first took shape.

Foundations in Japan

Kamezawa's formal BJJ training began in Japan with the Purebred team under Cristiano Kaminishi. Within that environment, he earned his blue and purple belts under Mario Reis, developing technical depth inside one of Japan's most disciplined competitive grappling programs. Japan's serious, structured training culture provided an ideal backdrop for his early progression.

His brown belt followed through another chapter of Japanese instruction, this time under Mauricio Dai of the Bon-Sai team. The combination of perspectives offered by Kaminishi, Reis, and Dai gave Kamezawa a broad, multi-layered technical foundation drawn from some of Japan's most respected BJJ minds.

Completing the Journey in Brazil

Returning to Brazil, Kamezawa sought out one of the sport's most celebrated and inventive instructors, training at the TT academy under Fernando 'Terere'. When TT closed, he transitioned to Alliance, coming under the guidance of Fabio Gurgel and Luciano 'Casquinha' Nucci. It was Gurgel and Casquinha who formally recognized his readiness for the black belt, promoting Kamezawa in December 2012 — the culmination of a trajectory that had stretched across two continents and through some of the sport's most respected training environments.

Proving the Pedigree

By the close of 2012, Kamezawa had already built a reputation as one of the most exciting Jiu-Jitsu prospects in the world — and his results had begun justifying that standing before he even received his black belt. At the 2012 IBJJF World Championship, he claimed gold at brown belt, delivering a performance that signaled unmistakable readiness for the sport's highest level. Earlier, during his Japan years, he had demonstrated competitive instinct by winning the Asian Open Championship at purple belt in 2008.

Black Belt Debut and National Dominance

His black belt debut confirmed the expectations surrounding him. At his first major competition as a black belt, Kamezawa submitted Carlos 'Portugues' Vieira before falling in a narrow defeat to Zak Maxwell — a loss that reflected Maxwell's elite caliber rather than any weakness in Kamezawa's game. The performance announced his arrival at the top level of the Peso Leve (76 kg / 167 lbs) division.

In 2013, Kamezawa captured the Brazilian National Championship at black belt, then repeated the achievement in 2014, closing the bracket alongside a Alliance teammate. These results, accumulated rapidly in the early stages of his black belt career, established him as one of Brazil's premier competitors at his weight class and validated the long, intercontinental journey that had brought him to the Alliance mats.
