Luciano Nucci

Born on March 11, 1972, in São Paulo, Brazil, Luciano Nucci grew up with a natural drive toward physical activity, developing an early passion for surfing and sport. His martial arts journey began in 1990 with capoeira, a discipline that sharpened his body awareness, rhythmic movement, and spatial intelligence — qualities that would translate directly to his future on the mat.

In 1993, Nucci made the shift to jiu-jitsu, beginning his grappling education and steadily building his technical foundation. His path found direction when Ryan Gracie established his São Paulo academy in 1995 alongside his brother Ralph Gracie. Nucci joined the program from the outset, training under Ryan Gracie's direct instruction and earning his blue belt that same year. His purple belt followed in 1996 — a rapid progression that reflected both his athletic background and his genuine commitment to the art.

Nucci's development at the Ryan Gracie academy was deliberate and technically grounded. After earning his purple belt in 1996, he continued refining his game through the late 1990s, reaching brown belt level in 1999 with a competitive record to match.

Early World Championship Results

At the 1999 IBJJF World Championship, Nucci entered the Peso Leve division at brown belt and claimed a bronze medal — an early signal of his capacity to perform against the sport's most competitive athletes. He returned to the World Championship in 2000, again at brown belt in Peso Leve, and delivered another bronze medal performance. These back-to-back podium finishes demonstrated a consistency under pressure that would define his career.

By the end of 2000, Ryan Gracie awarded Nucci his black belt, a formal recognition of the technical mastery and competitive pedigree he had built across five years at the academy. Nucci remained a central figure within the Ryan Gracie Team in São Paulo throughout the 2000s, growing in parallel as both a competitor and an emerging coaching voice.

Nucci's transition into the masters divisions brought no decline in ambition or output. Competing in the Peso Leve division (76 kg / 168 lbs), he established himself as one of the most durable and decorated masters competitors on the Brazilian circuit — a record built over more than a decade of sustained high-level grappling.

National and International Titles

His pursuit of national titles produced three gold medals at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals Masters, in 2009, 2013, and 2014 — a spread of results that speaks to both skill and longevity. On the international stage, he captured gold at the IBJJF International Masters & Seniors championship in 2011, the signature achievement of his competitive résumé.

Podium Consistency Across Two Decades

Beyond his titles, Nucci's record is defined by an exceptional consistency on the podium. He earned silver medals at the IBJJF International Masters & Seniors in 2003, 2008, and 2010, and added silver finishes at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals Masters in 2005, 2006, and 2016. Bronze medals at the IBJJF International Masters & Seniors in 2004 and at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals Masters in 2006, 2011, and 2014 complete a body of work that reflects sustained excellence across the better part of two decades at the elite level.

In 2007, Nucci departed the Ryan Gracie Team and joined Alliance, the São Paulo-based organization led by Fábio Gurgel that has grown into one of the most decorated teams in the history of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The move marked a pivotal shift — one in which his identity as a coach began to take center stage alongside his competitive career.

Establishing Alliance Mooca

Within the Alliance network, Nucci founded the Alliance Mooca affiliate in the Mooca neighborhood of São Paulo, building the academy from the ground up into a reliable producer of elite BJJ and MMA talent. His eye for developing athletes earned him a reputation as one of the most effective coaches in the São Paulo jiu-jitsu community, with multiple students going on to compete and medal at major international competitions — contributions that reinforce Alliance's standing as a world-class organization.
