Jose Carlos Sousa

Born on April 29, 1990, in Araruama, Rio de Janeiro, Jose Carlos Sousa da Silva came of age in a sporting culture deeply rooted in movement and martial tradition. Like many Brazilian children of his generation, he found his first athletic home in capoeira, beginning at age 8. Two years later, a public jiu-jitsu demonstration held in his city changed everything. Drawn immediately to what he witnessed on the mats, Sousa sought out instruction and found it at the DDR academy under coach Juarez Soares. That fortuitous encounter marked the beginning of a career that would carry him to the highest levels of international competition.

Building a Foundation at DDR

Under Juarez Soares at the DDR academy, Sousa developed into one of Brazil's most highly regarded young grappling talents. His early competitive record reflected the depth of that foundational training — back-to-back CBJJ Brazilian National Championships at the juvenile blue belt level in 2005 and 2006 announced his potential with authority. He carried that momentum into purple belt, claiming the IBJJF Pan American Championship and multiple IBJJF Rio International Open titles in 2008, followed by another Rio International Open title in 2009. That sustained excellence across belt levels drew attention well beyond Rio de Janeiro.

Joining GF Team

In 2009, through friendships cultivated with athletes inside the organization, Sousa received an invitation to compete with GF Team — then operating under the name Universidade Gama Filho (UGF) — at the Brazilian Team Nationals. The preparation period proved decisive: impressed by the professionalism with which GF Team approached competition, he committed to the club and went on to represent the academy in the years that followed.

Black Belt Promotion

Sousa's trajectory through brown belt continued to yield significant results on both national and international stages, culminating in a standout performance at the 2011 IBJJF World Championship — a silver medal in the absolute division and a bronze medal in his weight category. Those results provided the platform for Júlio César Pereira, his master within GF Team, to promote him to black belt later that year, recognizing both his competitive achievements and his growth as a martial artist.

Despite the prestige of his 2011 black belt promotion and a record of accomplishment that spanned multiple belt levels, Sousa faced a stark reality outside of competition: the income generated through jiu-jitsu was not sufficient to sustain the lifestyle required to pursue the sport at the highest level. He made the difficult decision to enlist in the military police as a path to financial stability — a choice that weighed heavily on him.

Rather than simply stepping back from competing, Sousa severed all connection to jiu-jitsu entirely, ceasing to train, to coach, and even to follow news about the sport. The years between his 2011 black belt promotion and his eventual return in 2016 represent a complete withdrawal from the world he had spent his childhood and adolescence building — a reality that speaks to the economic pressures that too often cut short promising careers in professional jiu-jitsu.

A Quiet Re-Entry Through Friendship

The path back to jiu-jitsu began not with competition, but with loyalty. In 2016, two close friends reached out to Sousa while opening an academy. As brown and blue belts, they needed a black belt to help shape the program, and given the strength of their personal relationship, Sousa agreed to step in. He began coaching regularly in April 2016 — a quiet return to a world he had left behind.

Reigniting the Competitive Drive

The instinct to compete resurfaced quickly. Sousa tested himself at an internal police force tournament and emerged victorious, and with that win came a rekindling of the drive that had defined his earlier career. He began entering progressively larger events while maintaining his responsibilities with the military police, making appearances at the Brazilian Nationals and the Rio Fall International Open. The results he posted against high-level athletes in the lightweight division confirmed that his years away had not diminished his ability on the mat.

Reestablishing Elite Status

By May 2017, Sousa had reestablished himself as a genuine force in BJJ's international lightweight scene. He claimed gold at the 2017 IBJJF Rio Fall International Open and earned a 3rd place finish at the 2017 CBJJ Brazilian National Championship. Taken alongside his earlier career accomplishments, those results underscore the remarkable nature of his return — and position his story as a testament to both the sacrifices that professional jiu-jitsu demands and the resilience required to reclaim what was left behind.
