Cleber Luciano Costa was born on December 15, 1973, in Brazil, stepping onto the mats at just 5 years old to begin training judo. That early start built a technical grappling foundation he would refine over the next decade. At age 7, he added Brazilian jiu-jitsu to his training, taking his first steps in the gentle art under Royler Gracie at the Gracie Family's Academy in Rio de Janeiro.

The combination of two demanding combat sports forged a well-rounded grappler from the outset. His teenage years produced a judo black belt — a milestone that reflected the seriousness with which he had approached the sport since childhood. His trajectory in Brazilian jiu-jitsu proved equally distinguished. In 1993, just before his 20th birthday, Royler Gracie and Rolker Gracie promoted Luciano to BJJ black belt in a ceremony that honored the years of development they had guided together. Achieving dual black belt status in both judo and BJJ before the age of 20 set him apart from his peers and foreshadowed the competitive career ahead.

In September 1995, Luciano competed in Duelo de Titãs (DDT), a no-holds-barred event held in Rio de Janeiro that served as an early forerunner of modern mixed martial arts. Luciano claimed the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship in 2008 and again in 2013, then returned to the Masters division podium at the No-Gi World Championship in 2018. That same year, he captured the Fight 2 Win 145 lbs Championship, demonstrating that his competitive edge remained sharp well into his forties.
