Ilke Kubilay Bulut

Ilke Kubilay Bulut was born on May 8, 1989, in Geneva, Switzerland, to a Turkish father and a Swiss mother. His combat sports education began at age five in 1994, when he took up judo and steadily developed into a serious competitor through his early teens. That trajectory was interrupted in 2003 when a back injury sustained during a tournament led to a medically advised withdrawal from judo competition.

The timing of that setback opened a new door. Around 2003, Bulut and his brothers discovered Pride FC and the wider world of mixed martial arts, which drew their attention toward Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The transition followed a grappling logic familiar to many European combat sports athletes — the ground-based principles of judo translate naturally into BJJ — and for Bulut, the shift from one discipline to the other was both organic and well-timed.

By 2005, Bulut and his brothers had found their way to Anderson Pereira's gym in Geneva. He would remain under the same instructor for the entirety of his development — a continuity that would prove central to his growth as a competitor. He began entering tournaments almost immediately, traveling across Europe from the earliest stages of his training, channeling the competitive instinct forged during his judo years directly into his BJJ career.

In 2009, Bulut received his purple belt — a milestone that marked a decisive shift in his approach. Following that promotion, he committed to training as a full-time athlete, splitting his preparation between Europe and Brazil to accelerate his competitive development. The years that followed saw him build an extensive record on the IBJJF circuit, steadily advancing toward the sport's highest rank.

In June 2014, Anderson Pereira awarded Bulut his black belt, completing a journey of nearly a decade under the same instructor. That single-coach lineage — from white belt through black belt — speaks to the disciplined foundation underpinning his entire development. Bulut competes as a member of Icon Jiu Jitsu, the team rooted in his long-term training environment.

Brown Belt Dominance on the European Circuit

Bulut's brown belt record on the IBJJF European circuit stands among the most consistent of his division across that era. Between 2010 and 2014, he earned multiple podium finishes at the European Open, with the high-water mark arriving in 2013 when he claimed the gold medal at the 2013 IBJJF European Open — one of the most competitive colored belt titles on the continental calendar. He also captured London International Open titles at brown belt in 2012 and 2014, with additional podium appearances in 2011 and 2013, demonstrating a sustained level of performance across the full span of his pre-black belt career.

Black Belt Results and Cross-Ruleset Versatility

Following his black belt promotion in June 2014, Bulut continued competing at the 76kg division and quickly proved his results were not a product of colored belt advantages. In 2015, he reached the final of the IBJJF European Open No-Gi Championship and secured victories at the IBJJF London Fall International Open in both gi and no-gi formats, as well as at the IBJJF Munich Winter International Open — a productive stretch confirming his ability to perform across both rulesets at black belt level.

His competitive output extended well beyond that early black belt window. In 2018, Bulut returned to the top of the podium at the 2018 IBJJF Zurich Open, a result reflecting sustained dedication to high-level competition across multiple years at the highest rank. The breadth of his record — spanning colored belt titles in the early 2010s through black belt victories later in the decade — marks him as one of the more durable competitors to emerge from the Swiss BJJ scene under Anderson Pereira's guidance.
