At 18, Bell made a decisive turn by enlisting in the US Army, choosing military service as a practical path to funding a college education. That decision proved transformative in ways he could not have anticipated. While stationed in Germany in 2011, Bell encountered Brazilian jiu-jitsu for the first time, training under a brown belt named John. The discipline and structure of military life translated naturally into his approach to training, and he took to the art with a focus that belied his limited athletic background. From his first sessions in Germany in 2011, Dominique Bell demonstrated a rate of progression unusual even by the standards of dedicated competitors. The broader BJJ community took notice of Bell in 2015, when he claimed gold at the IBJJF World Championship as a purple belt, immediately marking him as one of the sport's most promising prospects. His brown belt career proved equally impressive, featuring an IBJJF World No-Gi Championship title in 2016, an IBJJF European Open gold in 2017, and an IBJJF Asian Open title that same year, alongside victories at the UAEJJF Grand Slam in Los Angeles and the IBJJF Los Angeles BJJ Pro. In 2020, Bell advanced to the final of the IBJJF Pan Championship, earning silver in one of the most competitive fields on the gi circuit. In 2022, he again reached a major final, claiming silver at the IBJJF European Open and reaffirming his place among the top competitors in his division.
