His childhood bore little resemblance to the typical background of a high-level martial artist — rather than competitive sports, Bell spent his formative years drawing and playing video games. Athletics were largely absent from his upbringing, making his eventual emergence as one of the most decorated colored belt competitors in recent IBJJF history all the more remarkable.

At 18, Bell enlisted in the US Army primarily as a means of funding a college education. Military service became the unlikely gateway to jiu-jitsu. Stationed in Germany in 2011, he discovered the sport and began training under a brown belt named John. The circumstances were far from the polished academy environment that shapes many top competitors, but the foundation proved solid enough to launch a rapid ascent through the ranks.

Bell's early development as a grappler unfolded alongside the structure and discipline of active military service — a dual commitment that few high-level competitors have navigated. While stationed in South Carolina, he trained consistently and attended seminars throughout the region, immersing himself in the local BJJ scene.

Those early seminar experiences left a lasting impression, though not always for positive reasons. Bell has spoken candidly about a pattern he observed among some visiting Brazilian instructors: arriving at seminars, issuing belt promotions, and departing without ever rolling with the students they had just promoted. His own blue belt promotion followed this pattern — he received the belt despite not yet training in the gi and, by his own account, not knowing how to tie it.

The Sean Roberts Encounter

A seminar taught by competitor Sean Roberts offered a sharply different experience. Unlike the instructors Bell had grown skeptical of, Roberts rolled with every student present after completing his seminar. Bell, actively competing at the time, went hard against Roberts and found himself handled with ease. The encounter might have ended there — but approximately two weeks later, Roberts reached out personally, told Bell he had genuine potential, and invited him to train in California.

Bell has described that interaction as both motivating and clarifying — a concrete example of what genuine instructor investment looks like when it extends beyond technique instruction and seminar fees to actual mat engagement and personal follow-through with promising students.

Bell's trajectory accelerated significantly once he came under the guidance of André Galvão at Atos Jiu-Jitsu, one of the most successful competitive teams in the sport's history. His progression through the colored belts was rapid and, by the standards of high-level competition, unusually well-documented by results.

The moment that announced Bell to the broader BJJ world came at the 2015 IBJJF World Championship, where he claimed gold at purple belt — a result that established him as one of the sport's most compelling prospects. His brown belt campaign proved equally commanding: he claimed the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship in 2016, the IBJJF Asian Open in 2016, the IBJJF European Open in 2017 and 2018, the UAEJJF Grand Slam LA in 2017, the IBJJF British Nationals, and the IBJJF Los Angeles BJJ Pro. The accumulated record left little doubt about his readiness for the next step.

On October 15, 2018, André Galvão promoted Bell to black belt, capping one of the more decorated colored belt careers in the modern IBJJF era.

As a black belt, Bell competes at meio pesado — the 88.30 kg / 195 lbs division — under the Atos Jiu-Jitsu banner, maintaining a consistent podium presence at IBJJF events. In the period immediately following his promotion, he demonstrated that the transition to the black belt division had not slowed him, taking gold at the IBJJF Denver Open in both 2018 and 2019, the IBJJF Las Vegas Open in 2019, and the IBJJF San Diego Open in 2019.

His results at marquee events reinforced his standing as a serious contender at the highest level. A runner-up finish at the 2020 IBJJF Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship demonstrated his ability to compete deep into the brackets of premier tournaments, while a second-place result at the IBJJF European Open in 2022 confirmed his continued relevance among the sport's elite. A gold medal at the IBJJF Indianapolis Open in 2021 added further weight to a black belt record defined by consistency across multiple circuits and calendar years.

In a July 2026 appearance on the Jits and Giggles Podcast, Bell delivered an unusually candid public critique of a practice that has persisted in BJJ since the sport's early expansion years: the promotion of students at seminars by instructors who have never rolled with them. His argument rests on a straightforward premise — a belt should reflect genuine knowledge of a student's game, and that knowledge cannot be formed without stepping on the mat with that student directly.

Bell grounded the critique in his own biography. His blue belt, received early in his training career while stationed in South Carolina, served as the central example: a promotion issued by an instructor who departed without rolling, awarded to a student who did not yet train in the gi and did not know how to tie the belt he had just been given.
