Endres Barbosa

Endres Barbosa was born on October 25, 1993, in João Pessoa, a coastal city in eastern Brazil near the mouth of the Paraíba River. Like most Brazilian children of his generation, he grew up playing football, the sport woven deepest into the country's cultural identity. At age 9, however, he pursued a less conventional path, competing in equestrian sports through his mid-teens.

The pivot toward combat sports came through his older brother, Esdras Mendes, who introduced Endres to mixed martial arts. The two siblings began practicing MMA techniques together at home, a habit that steadily eroded Barbosa's commitment to equestrian competition. By 15, he had made a decisive shift — quitting equestrian sports entirely to immerse himself in Muay Thai, channeling his competitive drive into the striking arts.

The transition to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu began with another nudge from Esdras Mendes, who invited Endres to join him for a BJJ class. After just a few sessions in September 2010, Barbosa was convinced. He walked away from Muay Thai and committed to jiu-jitsu on a daily training schedule.

His first instructor was Marcello Viktor at Cascão Jiu-Jitsu, under whom Endres built his foundational game and earned his blue belt. As his competitive ambitions sharpened, Barbosa sought a more tournament-focused environment — one capable of developing him into a world-class competitor. That search led him to Checkmat's affiliate in Paraíba, led by Tarcísio Jardim. The move proved defining. Jardim became Barbosa's primary coach and mentor, awarding him his purple belt and every rank that followed.

Esdras Mendes, meanwhile, pursued a parallel path through the sport, ultimately earning his black belt and establishing himself as a respected competitor and practitioner. Endres received his own black belt from Tarcísio Jardim in July 2017 — approximately seven years after first stepping onto the mats — a timeline that reflected both his rapid development and his unwavering commitment to elite-level competition across every belt rank.

By the time Barbosa reached purple belt, he was operating at a level that set him apart from most peers. In 2014, he claimed the IBJJF World Championship title in the purple belt division — a result that immediately positioned him as one of Brazil's most promising competitive prospects. He returned the following year and earned a third-place finish at the same event, underscoring the consistency that would define his trajectory.

His emergence on the international stage had begun even earlier. At blue belt in 2013, Barbosa placed third at the UAEJJF Abu Dhabi Pro, signaling his readiness for high-level competition well before his purple belt breakthrough. The pattern continued at brown belt, where he secured a third-place finish at the IBJJF Pan Championship in 2016 — another podium result at one of the sport's premier annual tournaments.

Competing in the lightweight division — Peso Leve, at 76 kg / 168 lbs — Barbosa built a reputation as a technically refined, competition-hardened athlete. He also began coaching jiu-jitsu during his purple belt years, a role he maintained through every subsequent rank, adding instructional depth to his growing résumé as a competitor.

The black belt marked an acceleration rather than a plateau. Awarded by Tarcísio Jardim in July 2017 after years of consistent podium finishes, Barbosa wasted no time establishing himself among Checkmat's most prominent representatives on the global circuit.

In 2018, he delivered one of his most productive competitive stretches, claiming three significant titles within a single calendar year. He won the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals No-Gi — earning a national title in a discipline that demands a distinct skill set from the gi game — then captured gold at both the IBJJF Brasilia Open and the IBJJF San Jose Open, the latter demonstrating his ability to perform at a high level on international IBJJF stages outside Brazil. In 2019, Barbosa added the IBJJF South American Championship to his black belt record, cementing his standing among the premier black belts competing out of South America.

Across his colored belt years and his time as a black belt, Barbosa assembled a résumé that validated the early promise he first displayed at the 2014 IBJJF World Championship. As one of Checkmat's most accomplished competitors on the international circuit, his career reflects the convergence of technical refinement, competitive discipline, and long-term dedication to a sport he first tried on a whim in September 2010.
