Rodrigo Conceição

Rodrigo Conceição was born on November 11, 1987, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and grew up in the Cantagalo favela — a community with a remarkable tradition of producing elite BJJ competitors. Celebrated figures such as Fernando Tererê, Jackson Sousa, and Alan "Finfou" all emerged from Cantagalo, making the neighborhood one of the most quietly influential origins in the history of the sport.

It was Rodrigo's mother who first brought Jiu-Jitsu into his life — not through formal enrollment, but through circumstance. Working as a cleaner at Ricardo De La Riva's gym in Rio de Janeiro, she brought her eight-year-old son along while she worked. Master De La Riva took notice of the boy and offered him a free membership, an act of generosity that set the course of Rodrigo's life. He trained under De La Riva long enough to earn his yellow belt before transitioning to Alliance Academy.

By the age of 14, Rodrigo had resolved that BJJ would define his path. Growing up in Cantagalo, he witnessed firsthand how the sport could serve as a powerful alternative to the crime that surrounded him. The men who had used Jiu-Jitsu to build lives of discipline and purpose became his role models, and he committed himself to becoming one of them.

After earning his yellow belt under Master De La Riva, Rodrigo Conceição made the pivotal move to Alliance Academy, coming under the guidance of Alexandre Paiva — widely known as "Gigi" — one of the most accomplished coaches in the history of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Training out of Alliance's academy in Leblon, Rio de Janeiro, Rodrigo immersed himself in one of Brazil's most prestigious competitive environments, surrounded by world-class athletes and demanding training standards.

The relationship between Rodrigo and Paiva proved to be one of the most formative of his career. Paiva awarded Rodrigo every belt from blue through black — a continuity of mentorship that speaks to the depth of trust and sustained development between athlete and coach. On December 19th, Rodrigo Conceição received his black belt from Alexandre Paiva in a ceremony widely celebrated across Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu media, marking the culmination of years of dedication forged through hardship and competition.

Conceição competes in the lightweight division — Peso Leve (76kg/167lbs) — and has established himself as one of Alliance Academy's most consistent representatives at that weight class on the international circuit.

At the age of 18, Rodrigo Conceição encountered another pivotal figure in his development: coach Elan Santiago. The two met through Cantagalo's social project "Amigos do Morro," when Santiago traveled to the favela seeking volunteers for his own community initiative — "Projeto Sonhos" — established at GRES Beija Flor (Grêmio Recreativo Escola de Samba Beija-Flor) in Nilópolis, Rio de Janeiro.

Conceição joined the coaching staff of Projeto Sonhos, dividing his time between community work in Nilópolis and his competitive training with Alexandre Paiva at the Alliance academy in Leblon. This dual commitment revealed the depth of his character — his sense of responsibility to the community that shaped him ran parallel to his ambitions as a competitor.

His involvement with Projeto Sonhos coincided with one of the most painful chapters of his personal life: the loss of his mother to breast cancer. The structure, purpose, and human connection provided by the work alongside coach Santiago helped Rodrigo maintain focus through his grief. Rather than derailing him, this period deepened his resolve to build a meaningful career in Jiu-Jitsu — fulfilling the promise he had made to himself as a teenager watching the men of Cantagalo use BJJ to build something greater than the circumstances around them.

Colored Belt Dominance on the Brazilian Circuit

Rodrigo "Aquiles" Conceição built one of the most decorated colored belt records of his generation on the Brazilian competition circuit. At purple belt, he claimed gold at the IBJJF Rio Open in both 2009 and 2010, announcing himself as a serious threat in his division. That momentum carried directly into his brown belt years, during which he became a dominant force at the national level.

At brown belt, Conceição captured back-to-back CBJJ Brazilian National titles in 2010 and 2011, complementing those victories with CBJJ Brazilian National No-Gi titles in both 2010 and 2012. He added a third Rio Open gold at brown belt in 2011, and finished as silver medallist at both the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals and the No-Gi Nationals in 2012, along with a bronze at the No-Gi Nationals at purple belt. It was a run of results that established him as one of the standout Alliance competitors in the lightweight division during those years.

Black Belt Results on the International Stage

The transition to black belt brought the elevated demands of the international stage, and Conceição continued to perform. He claimed gold at the 2019 IBJJF European Open Championship in the Master 1 division — a title that underscored his longevity and sustained technical development. He also reached the podium at the IBJJF Rome Open in 2018, taking silver, and earned second and third place finishes at the IBJJF Rio Winter Open in 2017 and 2016 respectively.

Across every belt level, Rodrigo Conceição demonstrated that his journey from the Cantagalo favela to the mats of Alliance was built on a competitive foundation as enduring as it was hard-won.
