Carlson Jr.'s formal introduction to jiu-jitsu began at approximately three years old, when he first stepped onto the mats under the Gracie training methodology. Trained directly by his father, he developed within one of the most demanding and productive competitive environments the sport has ever produced.
He became a core member of Equipe Carlson Gracie, the formidable squad that dominated Brazilian competitive jiu-jitsu throughout the 1980s and into the early 1990s. The team was renowned for producing champions in remarkable numbers, forging a culture of hard training, relentless competition, and technical depth that shaped an entire generation of practitioners. Training and competing within that environment from childhood gave Carlson Jr. a foundation few could match.
In 1991, at the age of 22, he earned his black belt — a milestone that reflected years of rigorous technical development and the exacting standards his father demanded of anyone carrying the Carlson Gracie banner. His continued dedication to both practice and instruction earned him progression to a 6th-degree black belt, cementing his standing as one of the senior authorities within the lineage his father built.
