Adam Ferrara's path to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ran directly through the wrestling room. After graduating from school, Adam took up the sport under the influence of his younger brother Jake Ferrara, already an established local standout. Training at a local wrestling club, Adam spent several years building a grappling foundation rooted in takedowns, top pressure, and physical conditioning — skills that would later become the defining hallmarks of his jiu-jitsu identity.

The pivotal shift to BJJ came when Adam joined The Armory, an MMA academy based in Florida. The gym's BJJ program attracted elite-level talent, and Adam found himself training alongside prominent figures such as Rodrigo Cavaca, Gabriel Rollo, Marcus Almeida, and Marlon Moraes. Immersion in that competitive environment ignited a deep passion for the gi, and the wrestling foundation he and Jake had built became the cornerstone of a distinctive grappling identity that would follow both brothers throughout their competitive careers.

Blue and Purple Belt: Building Through Transitions

Adam's climb through the belt ranks was shaped by a series of meaningful academy transitions, each adding a new layer to his development. When The Armory's original program ended, Pablo Popovitch took over the space and stepped into a coaching role for the Ferrara brothers, awarding both Adam and Jake their blue belts. Financial instability eventually prompted another move, this time to American Top Team (ATT) under coach Emyr Bussade, where the brothers earned their purple belts.

Brown Belt: A Defining Partnership

At ATT, the Ferrara brothers were introduced to Jonatas Gurgel, widely known as Tagarela — a highly respected instructor with extensive experience developing top-level competitors. Tagarela became an increasingly central figure in their competitive preparation. Through connections forged at ATT, AJ Sousa entered the picture as a regular collaborative coaching partner, and it was through the combined efforts of Sousa and Tagarela that Adam and Jake received their brown belts.

The brown belt years proved to be a breakthrough period. Sousa's alignment with GF Team gradually drew the brothers into his competitive camp, yielding strong results on the major circuit — most notably Adam's 1st place finish at the IBJJF Pans No-Gi Championship in 2015 and his runner-up performance at the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship that same year.

Black Belt Promotion

On July 1, 2017, immediately following the IBJJF World Championship, AJ Sousa promoted Adam to black belt in a ceremony that marked the culmination of years of dedicated training across multiple academies and coaching relationships.

Adam Ferrara and his brother Jake Ferrara are widely recognized for their seamless integration of high-level wrestling into their BJJ games — a hybrid approach frequently described as American jiu-jitsu. Their wrestling backgrounds provide a structural advantage in takedowns and top-pressure grappling that distinguishes them from competitors who develop primarily through ground-based training. A Consistent Record Across Belt Levels

Adam's competitive results validate this philosophy at every stage of his career. At purple belt, he captured gold at the IBJJF Long Beach Open in 2013 and back-to-back titles at the IBJJF Boca Raton Open in 2014 and 2015, while also winning the FIVE Grappling event in 2014 to demonstrate his No-Gi credentials. His performances escalated at brown belt, highlighted by the 2015 IBJJF Pans No-Gi Championship title and a 2017 UAEJJF US National Pro gold medal.

At black belt, Adam continued to perform at a high level, earning a 3rd place finish at the IBJJF Pans No-Gi Championship in 2017 — the same event he had won two years prior as a brown belt. That consistency across belt levels stands as a testament to the durability and adaptability of his wrestling-driven approach.

Adam Ferrara stands as one of the foremost representatives of GF Team in the United States, operating under the guidance of AJ Sousa. The affiliation with GF Team grew organically from the bond formed between Sousa and the Ferrara brothers during their brown belt years, as Sousa's influence became the dominant force shaping their competitive direction.

Competing in the Peso Pluma division (64 kg / 141.5 lbs), Adam carries the GF Team banner into major IBJJF events, including a 2nd place finish at the IBJJF Houston International Open in 2018. Together, Adam and Jake Ferrara reinforce GF Team's competitive profile across North America, collectively embodying the academy's commitment to wrestling-integrated jiu-jitsu at the sport's highest levels.
