Jake Ferrara

Born on July 21, 1992, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and raised in Columbus, Ohio, Jake Ferrara grew up with basketball as his primary sporting ambition — until a failed middle school tryout redirected his path entirely. At age 12, he turned to wrestling with no prior experience and immediately found his footing on the mats.

What followed was a six-year wrestling career defined by rapid progression and elite-level achievement. By his senior year, Ferrara ranked 4th nationally and earned Division 1 All American status, going 9-1 at his final national tournament. That performance earned him a scholarship offer from Millersville University in Pennsylvania, which he chose to decline. Rather than pursue collegiate wrestling, he channeled his competitive drive into coaching, taking on a youth wrestling program at a mixed martial arts gym in 2011 — a pivotal decision that set the stage for his transition into competitive jiu-jitsu.

Jake Ferrara's entry into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu came not through deliberate planning, but through injury. During his senior year of high school, a broken thumb left him sidelined by his Athletic Director, barred from wrestling practice and competition until fully healed. His older brother Adam — who had begun training BJJ five months earlier — used the recovery window to introduce Jake to submission grappling. The two drilled positions together for hours at home, a routine that became a defining feature of Jake's early development and a cornerstone of the brothers' shared grappling identity.

Finding a Foundation at Armory

In 2010, Ferrara formalized his training at a grappling gym called Armory, where he encountered an exceptional coaching staff. He worked extensively alongside Rodrigo Cavaca, Gabriel Rollo, Marlon Moraes, and Marcus Almeida — known as Buchecha — during this formative stretch on the mats. When the Armory group returned to Brazil, former ADCC champion Pablo Popovitch took over the academy and awarded Ferrara his blue belt.

Earning Stripes Through ATT and Beyond

Despite the quality of training under Popovitch, financial instability at the academy prompted the Ferrara brothers to seek a new training home. They moved to Emyr Bussade's American Top Team (ATT) gym, where the coach known as "Shark" promoted Jake to purple belt after three years of dedicated training. The brothers also trained for several years alongside Jonatas Gurgel — known in the community as Tagarela — another prominent ATT figure who sharpened their technical development. Their journey ultimately brought them to AJ Sousa, one of Popovitch's top students, who awarded Jake his black belt in 2017.

Jake Ferrara's competitive record reflects the depth of his technical foundation and the rigor of his training background. At purple belt in 2014, he announced himself as a formidable force on the circuit by winning gold at both the NAGA Pans Championship and the FIVE Grappling North American Championship — back-to-back titles across multiple competitive formats.

Purple and Brown Belt Highlights

His purple belt campaign carried into 2015 with a bronze medal at the 2015 IBJJF Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship, one of the sport's most prestigious gi tournaments, along with a runner-up finish at the 2015 UAEJJF US National. That same year, competing at brown belt, Ferrara reached the silver medal match at the 2015 IBJJF World No-Gi Championship — a standout result against elite international competition that confirmed his readiness for the sport's highest division.

Black Belt Debut and Beyond

Ferrara's black belt debut on the IBJJF circuit delivered an immediate statement: gold at the 2017 IBJJF Cincinnati International Open, a confident entry into the sport's most competitive ranks. He competes as a representative of the Grappling Fight Team (GFT) in the Peso Pena division at 70 kg (154.5 lbs). Alongside his brother Adam Ferrara, Jake stands as one of the standout competitors of his generation — a distinction built on results across gi, no-gi, and submission-only competition at the sport's highest levels.
