Vannessa Griffin was born on August 12, 1997, in Warwick, Rhode Island. Following the passing of her father, she and her family relocated to Maryland, cycling through several towns before settling in Elkridge. The transition, while born of difficult circumstances, would ultimately shape the trajectory of her life in ways the young Griffin could not have anticipated.

Growing up in Elkridge, Vannessa developed a broad curiosity about sports without committing deeply to any single pursuit. That changed during her tweens, when proximity proved to be destiny: Crazy 88 Academy neighbored her residence, and at 13, she walked through its doors and enrolled in a jiu-jitsu class under coach Jon Delbrugge. What began as an after-school activity quickly evolved into a lifelong calling.

Inside Crazy 88, Griffin's development accelerated rapidly under the guidance of head coach Julius Park. From her yellow belt days onward, she committed to a near full-time training schedule — a level of dedication that distinguished her from peers and marked her as one of Park's most promising students. Alongside her demanding mat time, Griffin balanced academic responsibilities and contributed to the team's coaching program, demonstrating a maturity and investment in the sport that extended well beyond competition.

Her coachability and relentless work ethic made her a standout within the Crazy 88 – Team Lloyd Irvin program, and she grew into one of Julius Park's premier students across the colored belt divisions. That journey culminated on June 20, 2020, when Park promoted Griffin to black belt — a formal recognition of years of extraordinary dedication and competitive excellence. On the competition circuit, Griffin represents both Crazy 88 and Team Lloyd Irvin, carrying the banner of her academy at the sport's highest levels.

Vannessa Griffin's colored belt career ranks among the most decorated of her generation, defined by consistent gold medal performances across the sport's most prestigious IBJJF tournaments. Competing in the Peso Médio division (69 kg / 152.5 lbs), she demonstrated an ability to perform at the highest level regardless of belt rank or tournament stage.

Blue and Purple Belt Dominance

At blue belt, Griffin announced herself as a genuine force, claiming gold at the 2015 IBJJF World Championship and the 2015 IBJJF Pan Championship — a dual title run that immediately established her as one of her division's most dangerous competitors. Her purple belt campaign reinforced that status, with Griffin capturing gold at the 2017 IBJJF World Championship and the 2017 IBJJF Pan Championship, confirming that her blue belt success was built on substance, not circumstance.

Brown Belt Breakthrough

The brown belt years represented Griffin's most prolific stretch of competition. In 2017, she added the IBJJF Pan No-Gi title to her résumé, and in 2018 she claimed the Fight to Win Brown Belt Welterweight Championship — demonstrating her effectiveness in submission-only formats alongside her gi game. By 2019, she stood at the very top of the brown belt division, taking gold at the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship, one of the most coveted titles on the no-gi calendar. She entered 2020 in peak form, capturing gold at the 2020 IBJJF European Open before her promotion to black belt later that year. Griffin wasted no time establishing herself at the black belt level following her promotion in June 2020. Within months of stepping into the sport's most competitive division, she reached the podium at the IBJJF Pan Championship No-Gi, earning a silver medal — a strong debut that signaled her readiness to compete among the elite. She returned to that same event in 2021 and claimed gold at the 2021 IBJJF Pan Championship No-Gi, converting her runner-up finish into a championship in the span of a single year.

She also earned a bronze medal at the IBJJF Pan Championship in 2020, demonstrating her ability to contend across both gi and no-gi formats in the early stages of her black belt journey. Representing Crazy 88 and Team Lloyd Irvin, Griffin competes among the elite of the women's Peso Médio division, building upon one of the most accomplished colored belt legacies in recent IBJJF history.
