First Steps on the Mat
Formal BJJ training became available to Park in 1998 when he enrolled at Cornell University, where Will Kabat-Zinn — a blue belt affiliated with Boston Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu — was teaching classes. Recognizing the limits of that setting, Park transitioned to the Renzo Gracie Academy, where he immersed himself in a structured program under Renzo Gracie himself.
Building Through the Ranks
By 1999, Park had earned his blue belt under Renzo and taken on the responsibility of running Cornell's unofficial BJJ club — introducing the art to fellow students while continuing to sharpen his own skills. Before he departed Cornell and returned to Maryland, Renzo Gracie awarded him his purple belt in recognition of his growth and contributions to the university's grappling community.
Earning the Black Belt
Back in Maryland, Park joined Lloyd Irvin's Team, where training under Lloyd Irvin elevated his game significantly. That high-caliber, competition-driven environment pushed him through his brown belt and, in 2013, to his black belt — completing a journey that had begun over a decade earlier with a VHS tape and an unfulfilled trip to a Manhattan academy.
