Tacio Carneiro

Tácio Carneiro Alves was born on April 27, 1998, in Búzios, a coastal town in Rio de Janeiro state celebrated for its beaches and glamorous reputation. That reputation bore little resemblance to his reality. His father worked as a joiner and his mother as a housemaid, placing the family far removed from the resort lifestyle for which Búzios is known internationally.

Carneiro's introduction to jiu-jitsu came at age seven through a grassroots community project led by brothers Reinaldo and Roberto Ende. The Ende Brothers designed their initiative specifically to steer children away from the streets and from crime, using jiu-jitsu as both a practical discipline and a vehicle for instilling social values, structure, and resilience. Those early lessons on the mat became the foundation of everything that followed.

Financial constraints meant Carneiro trained without a gi for an extended stretch of his early years — his family simply could not afford one. Month after month he arrived at class with the same enthusiasm, and that consistency eventually convinced his parents that jiu-jitsu represented a genuine path forward. They saved until they could present him with his first gi, a quiet but pivotal moment in his development.

Competitive Foundations

By age thirteen, Carneiro had committed to pursuing jiu-jitsu professionally. That decision required a difficult step: leaving the community environment where he had started and moving to a more competition-focused training camp. He joined the gym of Igor Rodrigues, who promoted him through his blue and purple belts.

A Fortunate Wrong Turn

As a purple belt, Carneiro set out to find a high-level school he had heard about in the Recreio dos Bandeirantes neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro. After getting lost on a bus connection, he found himself in an unintended part of the neighborhood — and happened upon a grappling gym called Campo de Treino Honório, known as CT Honório, run by José Honório Filho and his son Victor Honório. The Honórios welcomed Carneiro onto the team and, recognizing his circumstances, allowed him to sleep on the gym mats at no cost.

Casa do Atleta and the Road to Black Belt

After roughly a year, Victor Honório accepted a grappling coaching position in Qatar, leaving Tácio without his primary training partner. Before departing, Victor directed him toward Casa do Atleta — Home of the Athlete — a training facility in Poços de Caldas, Minas Gerais, that offered accommodation and training to talented colored-belt athletes. The program, led by Paulo Rezende, carried a distinguished lineage: alumni and affiliated names included Marcelo Garcia, Matheus Diniz, Reinaldo Ribeiro, and Claudio Silva, who went on to compete in the UFC. Casa do Atleta also operated as a feeder program for Qatar's expanding BJJ market — a connection that would shape Carneiro's trajectory directly.

After two years competing under the Casa do Atleta banner, Carneiro accepted the head-coach position at Vision BJJ, a Doha-based academy founded by Fabrício Moreira and Sheik Nasser Nawaf Althani. He relocated to Qatar in 2019. In January 2020, following his gold-medal performance at the IBJJF European Open in the brown belt division, Paulo Rezende and Fabrício Moreira awarded Carneiro his black belt — a promotion that recognized not only competitive achievement but the full arc of a journey shaped by the Ende Brothers, Igor Rodrigues, the Honório family, and the Casa do Atleta environment.

Juvenile Breakthrough

Carneiro's colored belt years established him as one of the more closely watched prospects on the IBJJF circuit. At the juvenile level, he won the IBJJF South American Championship Juvenile and the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals Juvenile in both 2014 and 2015, then reached the podium at the IBJJF World Championship Juvenile in 2015 with a third-place finish — results that signaled his potential at an early age.

Adult Division Ascent

The momentum carried into the adult divisions. At purple belt, Carneiro claimed gold at the IBJJF South American Championship in 2018 and added third-place finishes at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals in both 2017 and 2018. His brown belt results climbed further: a Brazilian Nationals title at the 2019 CBJJ Brazilian Nationals and third place at the 2019 IBJJF World Championship built the case for his promotion, before the 2020 IBJJF European Open brown belt victory provided the definitive final chapter of his pre-black belt career.

Persevere Jiu-Jitsu and Community Vision

Carneiro's move to Doha in 2019 as head coach of Vision BJJ marked the beginning of a broader mission to develop jiu-jitsu infrastructure in Qatar. Beyond his coaching role, he co-founded Persevere Jiu-Jitsu in Doha, which has grown into one of Qatar's largest BJJ teams. The academy serves a wide cross-section of the community — children, adults, seniors, and athletes representing the Qatar national team — embodying the inclusive philosophy Carneiro has carried since his earliest days under the Ende Brothers.

GMI Recognition and Coaching Philosophy

His contributions to coaching earned him recognition as a GMI (GracieMag Instructor) professor, a designation reflecting both instructional standards and community impact. The philosophy underpinning his work is expressed in his own words: cada membro é importante para todo ecossistema — every member is important to the entire ecosystem. The team operates under the motto perseverança (perseverance) and a Jiu-Jitsu para todos (Jiu-Jitsu for everyone) ethos that echoes the accessible, community-rooted beginnings of his training in Búzios.

Carneiro frames high performance in terms that reflect long experience on both sides of the coach-athlete relationship. He describes competition results as the visible tip of the iceberg, while the decisive work — technical, physical, emotional, and psychological — happens daily, out of sight. The personal mantra he returns to is Os que semeiam com lágrimas colhem com alegria: those who sow in tears shall reap with joy. That phrase has taken on particular weight given what he has faced as a competing black belt.

A Season of High Achievement

The 2024 competitive season represented a high point of Carneiro's black belt career. He posted strong results at the AJP World Pro, the IBJJF European, and multiple Opens throughout the year. In a GracieMag interview, Carneiro reported winning the title at the ACBJJ World Championships held in Moscow, Russia, in late 2024 — a result he described as the culmination of years of sustained effort at the black belt level.

Medical Crisis and Return

The year's momentum came to an abrupt halt in early 2025. Competing at the IBJJF European Championship in Portugal in January, Carneiro experienced unusual and persistent exhaustion. He returned to Doha to prepare for the 2025 Pan American Championship, but the fatigue gave way to something far more serious: severe interscapular pain, numbness in the left arm, and a marked deterioration in his general condition. An emergency hospital visit led to immediate surgery to remove a thrombus that had migrated to an artery — a life-threatening event that brought his season to a sudden stop.

Following treatment and recovery, Carneiro returned to competition and earned a bronze medal at the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam — a result he has spoken about in terms that go well beyond its placement on a podium. In his telling, that bronze carried a personal meaning that a gold medal under ordinary circumstances could not have matched, because it represented proof of his recovery and his capacity to compete again at the highest level. The framing is consistent with the resilience-centered philosophy that runs through both his coaching and his personal history — the same philosophy that first took shape decades earlier, on the mats of a community project in Búzios.
