Pablo Mantovani

Pablo Mantovani's rise to the top of the featherweight division began in Porto Alegre, Brazil, where he trained under Guto Campos at the renowned GUETHO team. A program with a proven track record of producing high-level competitors, GUETHO provided the technical foundation and competitive environment that shaped Mantovani into one of its most accomplished products. Throughout his colored belt career, he captured titles at the World, Pan, and Abu Dhabi Pro levels — a record that signaled early on that he was destined for the elite ranks.

His transition to black belt coincided with an international expansion through the affiliation between GUETHO and Atos Jiu-Jitsu, based in San Diego, California. Competing under the Atos banner, Mantovani built a resume that firmly established him among the featherweight division's best. His accolades include ACB and IBJJF World No-Gi silver medals, IBJJF Pan-American medals in both gi and no-gi formats, and two appearances at the ADCC World Championship — one of submission grappling's most prestigious and selective invitational events.

An Unexpected Detour

In April 2020, Mantovani traveled to the United Arab Emirates to compete at the AJP World Pro Championship, scheduled for April 17, 2020. The event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the subsequent closure of international airports left him stranded in the UAE with no viable path home. What began as a brief competitive trip quickly became an open-ended stay in unfamiliar territory.

Building a Coaching Career in the Gulf

Rather than wait for travel conditions to normalize, Mantovani made a deliberate choice to stay and redirect his energy into coaching. The UAE's well-documented institutional investment in jiu-jitsu made it fertile ground for the transition. He began offering coaching services at local schools, and his technical credentials quickly attracted the attention of Baniyas Sports Club, one of the country's leading sports institutions.

Mantovani completed a formal trial stage before being appointed head coach at Baniyas Sports Club. In that role, he took on the challenge of preparing Arab athletes for national league competitions — events restricted by regulation to Arab competitors. His goal was to develop his athletes to a level where they could contend for national cup and championship titles, a task that demanded both tactical precision and a thorough understanding of the UAE's competitive landscape.

Over 17 months, Mantovani stepped away from competition entirely, channeling his focus into building the program at Baniyas and establishing himself as a credible coaching presence within the UAE's jiu-jitsu ecosystem.

In February 2021, after 17 months away from tournament competition, Mantovani returned to the mats at the 2021 Abu Dhabi International Pro, part of the AJP Tour circuit. He claimed the gold medal in his division — a result that proved his elite competitive level had remained fully intact despite the extended absence.

The victory carried weight beyond the podium. It validated that his immersive period of coaching had not dulled his own performance, and competing as a representative of the United Arab Emirates added another layer of significance to the win. What began as a canceled flight and a period of uncertainty had evolved into a meaningful chapter of his career — one defined by adaptability, professional growth, and a return to gold.
