Pablo Mantovani Dutra was born on June 3, 1995, in Garopaba, a coastal municipality in the state of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil, and raised in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul. His path to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu began through his father Marcelo — a well-known Brazilian actor — who brought the then eight-year-old Pablo to his own training sessions in 2004. Marcelo's passion for the art proved contagious, and Pablo soon stepped onto the mats himself.

The GUETHO Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Porto Alegre became Pablo's sporting home, where the Campos brothers — Guto Campos and Guilherme Campos — guided his development from white belt onwards. His dedication earned its first tangible reward at the 2009 Brazilian Nationals, where he claimed a silver medal as an orange belt, signaling genuine promise at an early age.

In 2010, tragedy struck the Mantovani Dutra family when Marcelo was shot and killed during a daylight robbery. Devastated by the loss of the man who had first placed him on the mats, Pablo turned to jiu-jitsu as an anchor through his grief, supported emotionally and financially by his mother Vanessa. In 2012, Pablo began attending training camps at Atos Jiu-Jitsu's headquarters in San Diego, California, ahead of the IBJJF World Championships. His relationship with André Galvão and the Atos organization deepened with each competitive cycle, and he eventually represented Atos HQ — an associate team of GUETHO — on the international stage.

Colored Belt Dominance Across All Formats

Pablo's colored belt résumé reflects consistent dominance across both gi and no-gi formats. He captured gold at the IBJJF World Championship in 2014 as a blue belt and repeated at the IBJJF Pan American Championship in 2015 as a purple belt. The 2015 UAEJJF Brazil National Pro also fell to him at purple belt, and he added the UAEJJF Abu Dhabi World Pro in 2017 as a brown belt — demonstrating that his technical game translated equally to the submission-hunting format favored in Abu Dhabi.

A Career-Defining Brown Belt Season

The 2016–2017 brown belt season represented one of the most productive stretches of Pablo's career. He accumulated titles across the sport's most coveted circuits: the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship, the IBJJF Pan American Championship, the UAEJJF Abu Dhabi World Pro, and the ADCC Brazilian Trials in São Paulo. The Trials victory, in particular, underscored his readiness for the sport's elite no-gi arena.

In June 2017, Pablo received his black belt directly from the podium of the IBJJF World Championship — promoted by Guto Campos and Guilherme Campos, the same brothers who had guided his very first steps on the mats. The ceremony carried unmistakable symbolic weight, closing a full circle that had begun at GUETHO Jiu-Jitsu Academy over a decade earlier and had passed through the darkest chapter of his personal life.

Immediate Black Belt Impact

Pablo carried his momentum seamlessly into the black belt division. In 2017, he reached the final of both the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship and the ACBJJ World No-Gi Championship, earning silver at both. The following year, he placed second at the IBJJF Pan American Championship in both gi and no-gi formats and claimed bronze at the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship. Two appearances at the ADCC World Championship — the sport's most prestigious no-gi event — further confirmed his standing among the featherweight division's elite.

An Unexpected Crossroads

In April 2020, Pablo traveled to the United Arab Emirates to compete at the AJP World Pro Championship, scheduled for April 17 of that year. When the COVID-19 pandemic forced the event's cancellation and the closure of international airports, he found himself unable to return to Brazil. Rather than wait out an uncertain timeline, Pablo chose to remain in the UAE and leverage his competitive expertise by offering coaching services at local academies.

Building a Program at Baniyas Sports Club

His reputation as an elite featherweight opened doors quickly. After working with local schools, Pablo was appointed head coach at Baniyas Sports Club — a leading UAE sports institution that reflects the country's significant investment in jiu-jitsu at the club level. The appointment was not automatic; Pablo completed a formal trial stage to demonstrate his coaching credentials before securing the position. His mandate centered on building the club's competitive program with the aim of contending for club and championship honors, though UAE national league regulations limit those events to Arab athletes.

After seventeen months away from competition, Pablo returned to the mats in February 2021 by winning gold at the AJP Tour's Abu Dhabi International Pro — a fitting venue given the trajectory his career had taken since 2020. The victory confirmed that his competitive edge had survived both the extended layoff and his transition into full-time coaching responsibilities.
