Faced with a near-total absence of BJJ infrastructure in Pernambuco, Olimpio took a decisive step in 1996 and founded an academy on land owned by his father, naming it the "Free Style" academy. The act was one of genuine pioneering — with few if any functioning BJJ academies accessible to practitioners in the region, the creation of a dedicated training space was a landmark development for the local martial arts community.
Recognizing that he was still early in his own BJJ development, Olimpio invited the more experienced Charles dos Anjos to serve as senior instructor. This pragmatic decision ensured students received quality instruction while Olimpio continued advancing his own understanding of the art.
A pivotal turn came when Olimpio attended a competition and met Carlos Gracie Junior, founder and leader of Gracie Barra. He extended an invitation for Gracie Junior to conduct a seminar in Pernambuco — an event that proved transformative for the regional BJJ scene. In its wake, Olimpio began making regular trips to Rio de Janeiro to train directly under Gracie Junior, deepening his technical education and forging a lasting institutional bond. Through that sustained study and commitment, he earned his black belt under Gracie Junior's guidance, and the academy was rebranded as Gracie Barra Pernambuco, formally aligning the northeastern program with the global Gracie Barra organization.
When Charles dos Anjos eventually relocated to the United States, the full weight of leading the academy fell to Olimpio — at that point still a purple belt. Rather than retreating from the challenge, he embraced it entirely. His open-hearted approach to coaching, combined with a tenacious effort to secure sponsorships for competitors and deliver personalized attention to each student, gradually transformed Gracie Barra Pernambuco into the most productive and influential grappling academy in the state. His investment in students extended well beyond technical instruction into genuine advocacy — a quality that would come to define his reputation as a coach.
