Born in 1996 in Porto Alegre, the capital of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil, Robson Chaves grew up in the Rio Branco neighborhood and found sport early through two strikingly different disciplines: judo and skateboarding. He began practicing judo at age five, competing actively throughout his teenage years and building the grappling foundation that would later define his BJJ game. Skateboarding ran parallel to that journey — not as a passing hobby, but as a lasting dimension of his personal identity that he carried well into adulthood.

Jiu-jitsu entered Chaves's life not as a replacement for judo, but as an extension of it. Seeking to sharpen his newaza — judo's ground-fighting component — he took a friend's advice and joined Academia Sul Jiu-Jitsu in 2015, one of Porto Alegre's pioneering BJJ gyms. Fernando Fagundes served as his first guide on the mats. The transition from casual visitor to committed practitioner came through a decisive conversation with Moacir Mendes, a judoka who had carved out a successful career in jiu-jitsu. Mendes convinced Chaves that the sport deserved his full dedication, and from that point forward, his trajectory shifted decisively toward competitive BJJ.

With his commitment secured, Chaves came under the dual mentorship of Moacir Mendes and Mario Reis, the most decorated BJJ coach in Rio Grande do Sul's history. Competing under the Alliance banner, Chaves rapidly established himself as one of Brazil's most promising prospects, earning the nickname "No-Brake" — a direct reflection of his relentless, forward-driving competitive style.

His international potential surfaced early. In 2019, Chaves claimed gold at the IBJJF European Championship at purple belt, announcing that his abilities extended well beyond regional competition. At brown belt, he continued accumulating major titles on the Brazilian calendar, winning the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals in 2023 and the IBJJF South American Championship that same year. By 2024, his sustained consistency across premier tournaments had elevated him to the number one ranking in the IBJJF brown belt division — the product of years of disciplined preparation within the Alliance system.

Granted a US visa, Chaves traveled to Kissimmee, Florida, in March 2024 to compete at the 2024 Pan Jiu-Jitsu IBJJF Championship, where he won gold in the super-heavyweight brown belt division. The performance carried the weight of years of preparation directed at tournaments he had never been permitted to enter.

Months later, he arrived in Long Beach, California, for the 2024 IBJJF World Championship and repeated the feat, claiming gold once again in the super-heavyweight brown belt division. Winning both the Pan American Championship and the World Championship in the same year — in his first opportunity to compete at either — stands as one of the most dramatic single-season performances in recent Brazilian BJJ history. The black belt promotion from Mario Reis on the Worlds podium on June 1, 2024 brought the arc full circle, closing a chapter defined by patience and resilience and opening another defined by elite-level recognition.
