Sean Roberts

Sean Roberts was born on October 27, 1989, and raised in Southern California, where an early curiosity about martial arts drew him briefly to karate. That initial exposure planted the seed, but it was during his teenage years that the pull of combat sports returned with genuine purpose — this time directed squarely at jiu-jitsu.

The catalyst was his father, an avid follower of the early UFC events, who believed the Gracie family's approach to fighting was more practical and effective than any striking art. He introduced Sean to footage of Royce Gracie winning the first two UFC tournaments — a smaller man submitting larger, striking-focused opponents with systematic, ground-based technique. The tapes were persuasive. At 15 years old, Sean Roberts walked into Brad Jackson's Ralph Gracie affiliate academy in Orange County and took his first steps onto the BJJ mat, a decision that would define the course of his life.

Roberts developed steadily within the Ralph Gracie system in Orange County, earning his blue belt under Eduardo Fraga and his purple belt under Brad Jackson and Bruno Paulista. As he accumulated mat time and competition experience, he built a growing reputation as one of the region's most promising young grapplers.

That reputation received its first major national validation in 2008, when Roberts claimed a silver medal at the IBJJF World Championships as a blue belt — a result that announced his potential to a broader audience. His trajectory continued upward at purple belt, where he added a 2nd place finish at the IBJJF Pan Championships in 2010 and a 3rd place finish at the IBJJF World Championships that same year.

Seeking a more demanding competitive training environment, Roberts relocated to San Francisco in 2010 to train directly with Ralph Gracie and Kurt Osiander at the team's headquarters. The move placed him in a larger, more competition-oriented training group and marked a clear escalation in the seriousness of his preparation.

The years Roberts spent in San Francisco proved transformative. Training under Ralph Gracie and Kurt Osiander in a high-level competitive environment sharpened every dimension of his game, and that growth translated directly into results on the mat.

National Championship Dominance

As a brown belt, Roberts became a dominant force on the national stage, earning three American National Championships — a run of consistency that placed him among the elite American competitors of his era. Among those titles was the 2011 American National Absolute Championship, one of the most prestigious distinctions available at the event and a testament to his ability to perform effectively across weight classes.

Black Belt Promotion and the BJJ Kumite

In 2013, Roberts received his black belt directly from Ralph Gracie, the culmination of four intensive years of work in Northern California. That same year, he competed in Lloyd Irvin's BJJ Kumite brown belt tournament, finishing 2nd place in the gi division — a defining performance on a high-profile platform that cemented his standing as one of the leading American grapplers of his generation.

After four years in San Francisco, Roberts returned to Southern California. The move came with a practical challenge: the Ralph Gracie Academy's presence in the region did not offer the level of competitive sparring required to continue developing at the black belt level. With the full support and approval of Ralph Gracie, Roberts joined Lucas Leite's Checkmat-affiliated academy in La Habra, California — a gym built around the high-intensity training environment he sought.

Black Belt Competition Results

The transition coincided with a productive stretch of black belt competition. In 2014, Roberts captured 1st place at the UFC Expo/Grapplers Quest and 1st place at the SJJIF World Cup. The momentum carried into 2015 with a 1st place finish at the Guatemala Open and a 2nd place result at the FIVE Super League — demonstrating that his brown belt dominance had translated seamlessly to the highest level of the sport. Roberts continued adding to his black belt record in the years that followed, including a 1st place finish at the IBJJF American Nationals in 2018, a title that brought his national championship pedigree full circle from his decorated brown belt years.

Drawing on a competitive and instructional lineage that runs through Ralph Gracie, Kurt Osiander, and Lucas Leite, Sean Roberts founded Sektor BJJ Academy in Chino, California. The gym serves as both a competitive training hub and a platform for developing the next generation of grapplers in Southern California.

As a 3rd Degree Black Belt, Roberts brings the accumulated experience of a career built across multiple elite training environments to his role as a coach and academy founder.
