Born in 1990 in Porto Alegre, Brazil, Monique Elias built her early adult life around the fashion industry, beginning her modeling career at a young age. That trajectory shifted decisively at age 19, when she met Mario Reis, a respected Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and instructor. The encounter proved transformative — Elias began training BJJ under Reis shortly after, gradually redirecting her ambitions from the runway to the competition mat.

The transition demanded real sacrifice. As her jiu-jitsu training intensified, Elias developed the muscular, athletic physique that serious grappling preparation requires — a build at odds with the physical standards of the modeling world. Faced with that tension, she chose the sport without hesitation. Her marriage to Mario Reis in November 2013 deepened that commitment, merging her personal and professional lives into a unified pursuit of elite-level competition.

Training exclusively under Mario Reis and competing for Alliance, Monique Elias established herself as a dominant force from her very first competitive appearances. Her ability to perform under pressure at major events defined her colored belt years, producing a string of IBJJF World Championship titles — gold at white belt in 2010, blue belt in 2012, and purple belt in 2013 — that marked her as one of the most dangerous up-and-coming competitors in the women's divisions.

The 2014 Breakthrough

The 2014 season stands as the defining chapter of her pre-black belt career. Competing at brown belt, Elias swept double gold — weight and absolute — at the Pan American Championship, the CBJJ Brazilian National Championship, and the IBJJF World Championship in the same calendar year. That level of dominance across three major events is exceptionally rare, and it left little doubt about her readiness for the elite ranks. Mario Reis awarded her the black belt in June 2014 in recognition of her technical mastery and competitive record. The broader jiu-jitsu community took note, ranking her #2 on the Top 5 New Black Belt Prospects list for 2015.

Monique Elias — known by the nickname "Magra," a Portuguese term meaning "slim" or "lean" that nods to her modeling past — carried her momentum directly into the black belt ranks, competing for Alliance in the Médio division (under 69kg/152lbs). Her debut year at the new rank produced immediate results across multiple organizations and circuits.

Establishing Elite Status

In 2015, Elias claimed gold at the Pan American Championship and captured the UAEJJF Abu Dhabi World Pro title, proving her adaptability across both the IBJJF and UAEJJF formats. She also reached the absolute final at the IBJJF World Championship that year, finishing as runner-up — a result that demonstrated her threat beyond her weight category. The high point of her black belt career arrived in 2016, when she won the IBJJF World Championship in the Médio division, claiming the title she had been building toward since earning her black belt.

Sustained Presence at the Top

Elias returned to the Pan American podium in 2017 with another gold medal and continued competing at the World Championship finals level, finishing second in both 2017 and 2018. Her sustained presence across multiple seasons at the final stages of the sport's most competitive events established her as one of the defining competitors of the Médio division during a formative era for women's jiu-jitsu.
