Sylvio Behring

Sylvio Behring was born in 1962 into one of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu's most storied dynasties. The son of Flavio Behring, a 9th degree Grand Master, Sylvio grew up with direct access to the highest levels of BJJ knowledge and lineage. He is also the brother of the late Marcelo Behring, a foundational figure whose contributions to the martial art left a lasting mark on its development.

Sylvio's formal BJJ education began under the Barreto Brothers, with Grand Master Alvaro Barreto — a 9th degree black belt — serving as his primary mentor. His natural aptitude for grappling became evident early; by 1980, still a purple belt, he had already been selected as an assistant instructor under Álvaro Barreto — a testament to the exceptional skill and trust he had earned at such a young age.

Parallel to his BJJ development, Flavio Behring enrolled both Sylvio and Marcelo at the prestigious judo school run by George Mehdi, one of Brazil's foremost judo educators. Sylvio thrived in that environment, earning his black belt in Judo under Mehdi's instruction. This cross-training broadened the technical depth he would later bring to his teaching, giving his game a dimension rarely found among his peers.

Sylvio Behring received his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt in 1984 in a ceremony attended by João Alberto Barreto, Reyson Gracie, and Alvaro Barreto — a milestone that resonated throughout the Behring family. Later that same year, his brother Marcelo Behring received his own black belt, completing a remarkable chapter in BJJ history.

In 1987, Sylvio was appointed head instructor of the legendary Corpo Quatro academy, located on Rua Francisco Sá in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro. The academy carried a distinguished reputation for hosting the elite of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Sylvio's appointment placed him at the heart of the art's most vibrant institutional hub. That same year, he captured the First Challenge of Jiu-Jitsu Superfight Championship, affirming that his credentials extended from the teaching mat to the competition floor.

Among his most forward-thinking contributions during the Corpo Quatro years was the construction of one of the very first all-female teams in BJJ history. At a time when women's participation in the sport was minimal and largely unsupported, Sylvio's deliberate effort to recruit and develop female practitioners reflected a vision of BJJ that was inclusive and well ahead of its era.

Around 1992, Sylvio Behring undertook one of his most intellectually significant projects: the development of his "Progressive System of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu." This coaching curriculum blended structured pedagogy with the traditional principles that defined BJJ's philosophical core. At a time when formal teaching methodologies in the art were virtually nonexistent, the Progressive System represented one of the earliest and most coherent attempts to organize BJJ into a transmissible, scalable instructional framework.

During this same period, Sylvio formed a pivotal partnership with Fabio Gurgel in São Paulo. Their collaboration gave rise to Alliance — specifically the Alliance SP academy — which grew into one of the most recognized, decorated, and influential BJJ competition teams in the world. Sylvio's curricular vision and Gurgel's competitive drive proved a powerful combination, defining an era in sport jiu-jitsu and leaving an intellectual imprint on professional BJJ instruction that endured long after the partnership was established.

In 1994, a connection was made that would come to define Sylvio Behring's legacy as a developer of talent in underserved regions of Brazil. Master Ricardo Muzio brought to Sylvio's attention a gifted blue belt from the Gaúcho region named Márcio Corleta — an area that at the time lacked access to high-level jiu-jitsu instruction. Múzio believed deeply in Corleta's potential and asked Sylvio to take the young athlete under his wing. Sylvio accepted, regularly traveling south to provide coaching while also arranging for Corleta and his training partners to come to Rio de Janeiro to train directly with him. The investment proved transformative: Márcio Corleta went on to become a black belt world champion under Sylvio's guidance.

This mentorship expanded into the Winner-Behring affiliation, named after Corleta's gym, Winner. Under Sylvio's leadership, the affiliation became a pipeline for elite grappling and MMA talent, producing a remarkable generation of practitioners including Fabricio Werdum, Mário Reis, Rosângela Conceição, Alexandre Fortes, Igor Negal, and Marcelo Luz. The Winner-Behring model stands as a compelling demonstration of how structured regional development, driven by a committed master instructor, can cultivate world-class athletes from areas far removed from the sport's traditional centers of excellence.

In 2001, Sylvio Behring had plans to relocate to the United States, but after his visa was denied, he settled in Porto Alegre, where he remained until 2003. Rather than treating the circumstance as a setback, he channeled his energy into further elevating BJJ instruction throughout Rio Grande do Sul, continuing the regional development work that had characterized much of his career.

Beyond the mat, Sylvio made meaningful contributions to the administrative and institutional architecture of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He served as vice-president of FJJD-Rio (Federação de Jiu-Jitsu Desportivo do Rio de Janeiro), engaging directly in the governance and organizational development of the sport. He also served as head coach at the X Gym in Rio de Janeiro, working with multiple fighters affiliated with the Black House MMA team. These roles reflect a career shaped not only by personal competitive achievement but by a sustained commitment to the professionalization and institutional growth of BJJ at every level.

In 2008, Sylvio Behring was promoted to the red and black coral belt (7th degree) in a ceremony conducted by Grand Masters João Alberto Barreto, Alvaro Barreto, and his father Flavio Behring — three of the most senior figures in BJJ's historical lineage. He has since been recognized as an 8th degree red and white belt, placing him among the highest-ranked practitioners in the art's history.

Widely regarded as one of the premier grappling instructors of his generation, Sylvio's legacy spans multiple dimensions. His lineage connects the Barreto Brothers' branch of BJJ directly to a generation of world champions and influential practitioners. He helped build BJJ infrastructure across Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Rio Grande do Sul at a time when the art's reach beyond its Rio de Janeiro heartland was far from assured. His "Progressive System" established the intellectual foundations for structured BJJ pedagogy, and his role in co-founding Alliance placed him at the origin of one of the sport's most enduring institutions.

His team affiliation, Franco-Behring, reflects the continuation of his instructional lineage into successive generations. Taken together, Sylvio Behring's career encompasses competitive excellence, pioneering coaching methodology, institutional leadership, and the production of champions across both Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and mixed martial arts — a body of work that cements his standing as one of the most consequential figures in the art's modern history.
