Her family resisted her pursuit of BJJ, the kind of domestic opposition that might have redirected a less determined athlete.

Rather than train locally, Cordeiro made a deliberate early commitment by traveling to Brasília to train at the Gracie Barra academy. That decision, made at a young age, signaled the seriousness with which she approached her development. Balancing university studies and a job while training at an elite academy, she established from the outset a discipline that would define every phase of her athletic life.

What followed from those early years in Brasília was one of the most consistent competitive records in women's BJJ history. Cordeiro went undefeated across 65 consecutive matches — a 65-0 record that speaks not just to her technical precision but to the completeness of her game at every belt level.

Consecutive World Championships

Her IBJJF World Championship run was as clean as it was historic. In 2006, she claimed the world title at blue belt. In 2007, she returned and won at purple belt. In 2008, she completed the hat-trick with the brown belt world title — three consecutive years, three consecutive world championships, three different belt levels. Few competitors in the sport's history, male or female, have sustained that kind of dominance across the colored belt ranks.

No-Gi and Pan American Success

Later in 2008, Cordeiro extended her reach beyond the gi by capturing the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship in the combined brown/black division — confirmation that her skill set translated across formats. She also claimed the IBJJF Pan American Championship in the combined brown/black division, further cementing her standing at the top of the women's game during that period. Together, these titles place Cordeiro among the most dominant female competitors of her era.

In 2009, Carlos Gracie Junior promoted Ana Laura Cordeiro to black belt — the highest recognition within the Gracie Barra organization and a milestone that formally acknowledged what her competition record had long since demonstrated. The promotion signaled the opening of what should have been an even more prominent competitive chapter.

Instead, 2009 brought a severe back injury that abruptly ended her time as an active competitor. The timing was as difficult as it was ironic: she had just received the belt that unlocked the sport's most prestigious divisions, and she was regarded as a serious contender at the highest levels of the game. The injury closed that door before she had the opportunity to step through it.

The abruptness of her retirement did nothing to diminish the legacy she had already built. Her 65-0 record and consecutive IBJJF World titles at blue, purple, and brown belt had long established her place among the elite of her generation. The black belt promotion from Carlos Gracie Junior stood as a recognition of that body of work in its own right.

The close of Cordeiro's competitive career opened a second chapter defined by teaching rather than competing. In 2009, Marcio Feitosa, a senior figure within the Gracie Barra organization, extended an invitation for her to relocate to the United States and take on a coaching role. She accepted, moving to Yorba Linda in Orange County, California.

The transition from elite competitor to full-time coach is one many high-level athletes struggle to navigate, but for Cordeiro it represented a natural extension of her connection to Gracie Barra and to the sport itself. Her move also reflected a broader organizational strategy by Gracie Barra — placing accomplished Brazilian practitioners at the helm of international academies to raise the standard of instruction worldwide.
