Gustavo Machado

Gustavo "Guga" Machado was born on August 8, 1974, in Brazil, and took to the mats during his teenage years — the beginning of a lifelong commitment to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. His early competitive career as a colored belt through the early-to-mid 1990s was defined by consistent dominance on the regional and national circuit. He claimed the Atlântico Sul Championship three consecutive times in 1990, 1991, and 1992, and added titles at both the Recreio Sports Center Championship and the Copa Raulf Championship in the same era. That run culminated with a 3rd place finish at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals in 1995, one of the country's most fiercely contested national events.

Machado earned his black belt under Roberto Corrêa, whose structured approach established the technical and competitive foundation that would define his career. Alongside that mentorship, Machado trained extensively with Jean Jacques Machado and Carlos Gracie Junior, absorbing high-level perspectives from within the Gracie lineage and sharpening his understanding of classical BJJ methodology. These formative relationships produced a practitioner with deep technical roots and a well-rounded game grounded in the sport's most respected traditions.

After relocating to the United States, Gustavo Machado introduced Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to student-athletes through an instructor role at Old Dominion University in Virginia. That experience served as a proving ground for his teaching philosophy and laid the groundwork for a more permanent institution. In 1999, he founded the Gustavo Machado Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Virginia Beach, Virginia — a program that grew steadily over two decades into one of the East Coast's recognized BJJ hubs, attracting students committed to technical, competition-oriented training.

In 2019, the academy affiliated with Team R1NG BJJ, a partnership that expanded its competitive reach and organizational infrastructure. Rather than reshaping the academy's identity, the affiliation with R1NG extended it — connecting Machado's established program to a broader network of competitors and coaches while preserving the culture he had built across twenty years in Virginia Beach.

Gustavo Machado's impact extends well beyond the competition mats. He has served as an instructor in self-defense and hand-to-hand combat for some of the most demanding organizations in the United States government, including Navy SEALs, Army Special Forces, U.S. Marshals, and the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team (HRT). These units require techniques that perform under pressure in real-world conditions — not sport-oriented applications — placing Machado in a select group of BJJ instructors capable of bridging martial arts education with operational tactics.

His ability to adapt BJJ principles to military and law enforcement contexts earned him recognition well beyond the competitive community. This work cemented his reputation as a trusted authority in combat instruction and reflects the practical depth embedded in his technical approach to the art.

Machado's competitive drive carried well into his black belt years. In 2002, he earned a 3rd place finish at the IBJJF Pan Championship — one of the sport's most prestigious events — competing in the Leve division (76 kg / 168 lbs). That result stood as a clear measure of his technical proficiency against elite-level opposition.

His longevity on the mats proved equally noteworthy. In 2016, Machado placed 2nd at the IBJJF Charlotte Open in the M3 masters category, demonstrating that his commitment to testing and refining his game never wavered alongside a full-time coaching career. Sustained competition at that level, decades into a career that also encompasses elite military instruction and academy leadership, speaks to the depth and discipline that define his relationship with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
