Sofia Amarante

Born on November 7, 1980, in Houston, Texas, and raised in Florida, Sofia Amarante built her early athletic identity through competitive swimming and tennis. Her path to jiu-jitsu began through her husband, Felipe, who recognized the practical value the martial art could offer. At 23, while serving as a Deputy Sheriff at Broward County prison, Sofia began training as a means of developing effective self-defense — a decision that quickly grew far beyond its original purpose and came to define the trajectory of her life.

Her first coach, Armando Conde, guided her through the foundational stages of her development and awarded her the blue belt. When Conde relocated to Portugal, Sofia faced the crossroads that derails many early-career grapplers. Rather than stepping away, she pressed forward — seeking out new training partners and mentors to sustain her progression.

With Armando Conde's departure, Sofia continued sharpening her game under coaches Josh Manso, Saul Alencar, and Daniel Valverde, each adding distinct technical layers that steadily elevated her game. During this period, Sofia and Felipe took a defining step beyond personal competition by opening their own jiu-jitsu academy — a demonstration of long-term commitment to the sport and its community.

The pivotal shift in her competitive career came when she and Felipe aligned with Roberto Abreu's Fight Sports, placing her at the center of one of North America's most demanding BJJ programs. In December 2010, Roberto Abreu promoted Sofia to black belt — a milestone that carried historic weight, as she became the first female black belt in his lineage. That promotion was well-earned: her colored belt results included a gold medal at the IBJJF World Championship in 2009 at purple belt, along with No-Gi titles at both brown and black belt level in 2009 and 2010, signaling that her ascent through the ranks was built on elite-level performance.

Sofia Amarante competes in the Pluma division (53.50 kg / 118.0 lbs), and her black belt career stands as a testament to what sustained, disciplined dedication produces over time. Balancing professional responsibilities and motherhood alongside high-level competition, she carved out a place among the sport's elite in a way that distinguishes her story from many of her peers.

Gi and No-Gi Achievements

In 2012, Sofia reached the peak of international Gi competition, claiming gold at the IBJJF Pan Championship while also capturing the IBJJF World Championship No-Gi title in the same year — her most accomplished season as a black belt. Additional World Championship podium finishes followed in Gi competition, including third-place results in 2012 and 2016, as well as a strong runner-up performance at the 2013 IBJJF Pan Championship. Her No-Gi career proved equally consistent, with IBJJF Pan No-Gi titles in 2012, 2019, and 2021, and a runner-up finish at the IBJJF World Championship No-Gi in 2021.

Masters Division Dominance

In the Masters divisions, Sofia demonstrated remarkable competitive longevity, earning IBJJF Masters World Championship gold in 2016, 2018, and 2019, along with a Brazilian Nationals title in 2019. Her podium appearances spanning from 2009 through 2021 reflect not simply athletic talent, but a disciplined and enduring competitive philosophy — one that has cemented her legacy as one of the most accomplished light-featherweights of her generation.
