Quick Reference

Key principles

  • · The fulcrum (your wrist, forearm, or hip bone) must be placed directly behind the opponent's elbow joint for maximum leverage.
  • · Control the opponent's wrist with both hands and pull it toward you while driving the fulcrum into the back of the elbow.
  • · Keep your chest or bodyweight pressing into the trapped arm to prevent the opponent from retracting or rotating out.
  • · Apply the finish slowly and deliberately, as this submission creates pressure quickly and opponents often cannot tap in time if cranked.
  • · Anticipate the opponent bending their arm to escape by maintaining constant wrist control and adjusting the fulcrum placement higher toward the triceps tendon.

Execution

  1. 1 Isolate the opponent's arm by securing a two-on-one grip on their wrist with their palm facing up or away from you.
  2. 2 Position your forearm, wrist bone, or hip directly behind their elbow joint as a fulcrum point.
  3. 3 Pin their arm against your body by driving your weight forward and pulling their wrist toward your centerline.
  4. 4 Apply the finish by pulling their wrist down toward you while simultaneously pressing the fulcrum forward into the elbow, hyperextending the joint.

Common mistakes

  • × Placing the fulcrum too far from the elbow joint (on the forearm or upper arm), which dissipates pressure and allows the opponent to muscle out.
  • × Failing to control the wrist with both hands, letting the opponent rotate their arm and relieve the hyperextension angle.
  • × Applying explosive force instead of steady pressure, risking injury to the training partner because this submission has a very short range of motion before damage occurs.
