Fabbio Passos

Fabbio Passos was born on January 26, 1983, in Brazil, and his path toward becoming a professional grappler took shape early. Growing up captivated by the wave of 1980s martial arts Hollywood films, he pressed his parents for an introduction to combat sports of his own — a wish granted at age eight, when he began training judo. That foundational decision would inform his entire grappling career. By thirteen, Passos had added freestyle wrestling to his routine, competing in both disciplines simultaneously as a teenager.

His early competitive record reflected genuine ability. He claimed the SP Metropolitan championship and the São Paulo State championship, and earned selection to represent his home state at national-level events — a meaningful distinction for a teenager navigating two demanding grappling sports at once. As academic demands increased, however, Passos gradually stepped back from competition, allowing his studies to take priority.

In 2000, Passos returned to martial arts, drawn back by his enduring love of newaza — the ground-work dimension of judo that had always resonated most deeply with him. That affinity made Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu the natural choice, and he enrolled at the academy of Demetrius Angotti, a student of the renowned Fábio Gurgel. The fit proved immediately apparent. After only a handful of sessions, Angotti recognized an uncommon grappling aptitude in Passos and took direct action: he personally escorted Fabbio to Alliance headquarters and placed him under Gurgel's tutelage — one of the most respected figures in the history of the sport.

What followed was a decade-long progression shaped by the dual obligations of competitive development and academic responsibility. From white belt through brown belt, Passos balanced training and tournament preparation with his university studies. His first coaching role came through a social project working with underprivileged children in the Morumbi neighborhood of São Paulo — an experience that established coaching as a genuine vocation alongside competition.

In 2005, Fábio Gurgel awarded Passos his black belt, opening a new chapter in his development. He expanded his coaching work to multiple academies across Brazil, always operating within the framework of Gurgel's guidance. His competitive results from this period foreshadowed the podium consistency that would define his career at the highest levels: a first-place finish at the CBJJ Team Nationals in 2001 at purple belt, followed by podium appearances at the 2009 CBJJ Brasileiro in both gi and no-gi formats.

In 2010, Passos traveled to the United States primarily for competition, with no firm intention of relocating. The trip extended unexpectedly when Ricardo Miller — known widely as "Fanjinha" — invited Passos to coach at the Paragon Academy during his stay. He accepted, spending several months in California and finding the experience more formative than anticipated. The exposure to the American BJJ landscape sparked a genuine curiosity about building a life outside Brazil.

In 2011, Passos returned to the United States to compete at the IBJJF Pan American Championship, basing his training camp with close friend Rubens Charles — known throughout the grappling world as "Cobrinha" — who had recently established his own Alliance affiliate in Los Angeles. The arrangement worked well, and before Passos departed, Charles extended a full-time coaching offer. Passos accepted, and what had begun as a training visit became a permanent professional home.

Since 2011, Passos has served as a key coach at Cobrinha Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu & Fitness, helping Rubens Charles build and cement the academy's reputation in the United States. His role there represents both a continuation of his Alliance lineage and an independent contribution to the growth of high-level BJJ in Los Angeles. Though he competes internationally representing the United States, his identity as an Alliance practitioner — rooted in the instruction of Fábio Gurgel — has remained a constant throughout.

Fabbio Passos earned recognition as one of the standout light-featherweight competitors of his generation, with significant competitive experience also logged at rooster weight. His record across both weight classes, in gi and no-gi formats alike, reflects a sustained excellence that few athletes in those divisions have matched over such an extended timeline.

Masters and IBJJF Circuit Dominance

The defining result of his Masters career came in 2013, when Passos claimed gold at the IBJJF World Master Championship in the Master 1 division — a title that affirmed his standing among the global elite of his weight class. That same period saw him establish a commanding presence at the IBJJF American Nationals, where he won gold in both 2012 and 2013 in the Adult division, then returned to claim the Master 1 title again in 2015. His consistency on the IBJJF World No-Gi stage proved equally formidable: silver medals in 2012 and 2013 at the Adult level, and further silver finishes in 2015 and 2017 in the Master 1 division, demonstrated that his no-gi ability was every bit as refined as his gi competition.

EBI and High-Stakes Submission Grappling

In 2014, Passos stepped onto one of the most high-profile stages in submission grappling when he reached the final of EBI II at 135 lbs — the second installment of Eddie Bravo Invitational — finishing as runner-up in the submission-only format. The result placed him among the best no-gi lightweights in the world at that time and broadened his competitive profile well beyond the traditional IBJJF circuit.

Pan Americans and Continued Masters Success

His Pan American Championship record across the late 2010s reflected a veteran competitor still performing at the highest level. In 2017, he earned a silver medal at the IBJJF Pan American Championship in the Master 1 division. In 2018, he returned to claim gold in the Master 1 division — one of the most significant titles of his later competitive career. A bronze medal at the 2019 IBJJF World Master Championship rounded out a remarkable run of Masters-level results that had begun with the 2013 World Master title.

Additional podium appearances throughout his career — including bronze at the 2015 IBJJF Pan American Championship, bronze at the 2014 IBJJF World Master Championship, and World No-Gi bronze medals in 2011 and 2014 — underscore the depth and longevity of his competitive output. Across more than a decade of elite-level competition, Passos demonstrated a rare ability to perform consistently across gi and no-gi formats at both Adult and Masters levels, making him one of the most complete light-featherweight competitors his generation produced.
