Milton Bastos

Milton Bastos was born on May 19, 1982, in São Paulo, Brazil, and spent his formative years in the Bairro da Liberdade borough — a neighborhood rich in cultural identity that instilled in him a strong sense of discipline and character. His first exposure to martial arts came through kung fu in childhood, planting the seeds of a lifelong commitment to combat sports.

At age 13, Bastos found his way to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, beginning his training under Marcos Paulo. Under Paulo's guidance, he progressed steadily through the junior belt system, eventually earning his purple belt and building a technical foundation that would define his competitive future.

At age 18, Bastos expanded his grappling arsenal by taking up freestyle and greco-roman wrestling — disciplines that would become central to his competitive identity. The wrestling background sharpened his takedown offense, scramble ability, and physical intensity, forging a well-rounded grappler with credentials in both gi and no-gi formats.

In 2009, Milton Bastos made the pivotal decision to relocate from Brazil to the United States, joining Paragon Academy under the instruction of Ricardo Miller. The structured, high-level training environment at Paragon gave Bastos the platform to accelerate his development against elite competition.

His results at brown belt were immediate and commanding. In 2009, he claimed gold at the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship, announcing his arrival on the international stage. In 2010, he followed with back-to-back titles at the IBJJF World Championship and the IBJJF Pan American Championship at brown belt — a run that cemented his status as one of the most dominant upper-belt competitors in the world at the time.

In recognition of his exceptional performances and technical maturity, Ricardo Miller promoted Bastos to black belt in June 2010. His affiliation with Paragon Academy continued until 2013, when that chapter closed and a new phase of his career began.

Building a No-Gi Legacy

Milton Bastos established himself as one of the most consistent and decorated no-gi competitors of his generation. His freestyle and greco-roman wrestling background serves as the bedrock of his no-gi game, lending him elite scramble ability, relentless takedown pressure, and the physical tools to impose his will from the opening exchange.

At the black belt level, Bastos assembled a near-unrivaled record in the IBJJF Master 1 no-gi division, claiming the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship in 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015. Four titles across four years placed him firmly among the elite specialists in the format. He also made his presence felt on the gi circuit, winning the IBJJF Pan American Championship in the Master 1 division in 2012 and reaching the runner-up position at the same event in 2014.

Masters Circuit Podium Record

Bastos demonstrated remarkable consistency throughout his masters career. He earned third-place finishes at the IBJJF Masters World Championship in 2012, 2015, and 2016, and added podium results at the IBJJF Pan American Championship in 2013, 2016, and 2017. In 2014, he reached the runner-up position at the IBJJF Masters World Championship.

The capstone of his masters competition journey came in 2017, when Bastos claimed the IBJJF World Masters Championship in the Master 1 division — a victory that affirmed his ability to perform at the highest level deep into his competitive career and underscored the lasting impact of the technical and athletic qualities he developed over two decades on the mats.

Following the conclusion of his affiliation with Paragon Academy in 2013, Milton Bastos channeled his competitive pedigree and institutional vision into building something enduring for the broader jiu-jitsu community. Together with Samir Chantre, Alan Moraes, and Osvaldo Moizinho, Bastos co-founded Ares BJJ — an association born from a shared mission to develop elite competitors and advance the sport on an international scale.

Ares BJJ has grown into a well-respected force within the global BJJ community, recognized for producing high-level athletes and cultivating a culture of technical excellence. Bastos's role as both an active competitor and a founding leader of the association reflects his investment in the long-term growth of jiu-jitsu — a commitment that extends well beyond his own achievements on the mat.
