Koji Shibamoto was born on August 23, 1980, in Japan, and demonstrated a natural affinity for martial arts from an early age, with judo serving as the cornerstone of his athletic development. His dedication to the sport propelled him to the highest levels of Japanese collegiate competition, earning him a place on the Tokai University judo team, where he became one of the program's most prominent standouts. His excellence on the tatami extended beyond domestic competition, as Shibamoto went on to represent Japan in international judo tournaments, cementing his reputation as an elite-level athlete.

After graduating from Tokai University with a degree in Physical Education, Shibamoto transitioned into the professional world, taking a position at a sports club. While the role kept him connected to athletics, it gradually drew his focus away from the competitive rigor that had defined his judo career. That period of drift, however, set the stage for a remarkable reinvention — the foundations built through years of judo training, from body awareness and grip fighting to competitive discipline, would prove instrumental in shaping his approach to an entirely new martial art.

By 2004, Shibamoto recognized the need for a new competitive challenge and began searching for a jiu-jitsu academy capable of offering the highest level of instruction. The turning point came when he encountered an instructional DVD by Mitsuyoshi Hayakawa, showcasing Hayakawa's technical approach to jiu-jitsu. Deeply impressed by what he saw, Shibamoto sought out Hayakawa directly, enrolling at Tri-Force and beginning his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey under Hayakawa's guidance.

The transition proved to be anything but gradual. Just one year into his training, Shibamoto announced his arrival by winning the All Japan tournament in the blue belt division in 2005 — a result that signaled his exceptional talent and the speed at which his judo-forged athleticism was translating to the BJJ mats. As his commitment deepened, he made the defining decision to quit his job and dedicate himself entirely to jiu-jitsu, a move that reflected both his passion for the art and his belief in his own potential.

That belief was validated in emphatic fashion in 2010, when Shibamoto captured gold at the IBJJF World Championship in the brown belt division, one of the most prestigious titles in competitive jiu-jitsu. He also claimed first place at the Tokyo International Open that same year in the brown belt division, underscoring his dominance at that stage of his development. Shortly after his World Championship victory, on June 19, 2010, Mitsuyoshi Hayakawa awarded Shibamoto his black belt — an achievement he reached in approximately five and a half years of BJJ training, a remarkably swift ascent through the ranks. His journey from a curious newcomer inspired by a training DVD to a World Champion in under six years stands as a testament to his work ethic, competitive intelligence, and the strength of his athletic foundation.

Establishing an International Presence

As a black belt, Koji Shibamoto established himself as one of the most accomplished Japanese competitors on the international BJJ circuit, competing in the Peso Galo (roosterweight) division at 57kg / 126lbs and representing Japan against the world's elite grapplers. His black belt career produced immediate results: in 2011, he claimed victory at the Rickson Gracie Cup, and the following year he captured gold at the IBJJF European Open in 2012, demonstrating his ability to compete and win at the highest level across different continents.

Longevity and Podium Consistency

Longevity and consistency at the elite level became defining features of Shibamoto's black belt career. He returned to the top of the podium at the IBJJF Asian Open in both 2017 and 2018, back-to-back victories that affirmed his continued dominance within his division well into the latter stages of his competitive career. His performances at the IBJJF Pan Championship further illustrated his standing among the world's best roosterweights, earning a silver medal in 2018 and a bronze medal in 2019.
