Brandon Mullins

Brandon Mullins was born in December 1979 in the United States, and his first exposure to combat sports came through wrestling during his 8th and 9th grade years. The bridge from wrestling to jiu-jitsu was built by an unlikely catalyst: a series of VHS tapes. Mullins' wrestling coach, captivated by Royce Gracie's dominant performances in the early UFC events, began studying Brazilian jiu-jitsu and introduced it to his wrestling students. That early glimpse of Gracie's ground mastery planted the seeds for what would become Mullins' life's pursuit.

Around 1998, Mullins began more structured BJJ training alongside Paul Thomas, working on throws and foundational groundwork. It was Thomas who first brought the name Vinicius Magalhães — known widely as Draculino — to Mullins' attention. Thomas had spent time in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, training directly under Draculino and returned deeply impressed by the black belt's technical efficiency on the ground. That firsthand account left a lasting impression on Mullins, planting the idea of one day training under one of Brazil's most respected instructors.

As Mullins transitioned between training environments, he settled under Klay Pittman in Lubbock, Texas, occasionally supplementing his development with sessions under Carlos Machado. The years under Pittman proved foundational — Mullins trained at that academy for approximately seven years, a period of steady technical refinement that culminated in his black belt under Pittman's guidance.

A pivotal moment in Mullins' trajectory came in 2000, when he met Vinicius Magalhães in person at a seminar. The encounter confirmed everything Paul Thomas had described; Draculino's precision and depth of technique left an immediate impression. When Draculino eventually relocated permanently to the United States and established Gracie Barra Texas, Mullins recognized the opportunity and joined the academy. Training under one of the world's premier BJJ coaches paid dividends both in his personal development and competitive output. His commitment and skill level earned him a role as assistant instructor at Gracie Barra Texas headquarters, working directly alongside Vinicius Magalhães and cementing his place within the Gracie Barra organization.

Brandon Mullins built his reputation as one of the most formidable competitors in the roosterweight division — known in IBJJF terminology as Galo (57kg/126lbs) — with particular mastery in no-gi competition. His breakthrough on the elite circuit arrived in 2009 when he claimed gold at the IBJJF Pan No-Gi Championship, signaling his arrival among the sport's top lightweights.

That title proved no isolated result. Mullins returned to the 2010 IBJJF Pan No-Gi Championship and again reached the final, earning silver and underscoring his sustained presence at the division's peak. The defining stretch of his no-gi career followed in back-to-back fashion, as Mullins captured the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship title in both 2010 and 2011 — placing him in rare company and cementing his status as the definitive roosterweight no-gi specialist of that era.

His competitive excellence extended beyond no-gi formats as well. A first-place finish at the US Open in 2010 and a title at the 2013 IBJJF European Open demonstrated his ability to perform at the highest level across both gi and no-gi competition. Known by the nickname 'Wolverine,' Mullins' competitive identity is defined by tenacity and relentless pressure — qualities that translated directly into championship success across multiple stages of his career.
