About this video
This technique is a counter to the De La Riva guard when the opponent has strong ankle control. Here's how to execute the Leg Weave Pass:
- Start by making a grip on the opponent's ankle and closing your elbow. This grip is particularly effective when the opponent steps on your hips.
- Posture up and use your palm to clear the De La Riva hook. At the same time, push and walk your leg a little to prevent the opponent from re-establishing the De La Riva hook. Make sure your toes point outside.
- Perform a small back step and push the opponent's leg down. Your knee should come inside the opponent's legs. Place your hands on the mat for balance.
- Try to use the opponent's hook to lift you. To counter this, don't drop your hips down. Instead, place your knee between the opponent's legs and extend your leg.
- Once you're in this position, you have several options. You can break the opponent's grip on your heel and walk your leg. From here, you can either perform a long step pass or a leg weave pass.
- For the long step pass, grab the opponent's collar and lean forward. Slide your knee over the opponent's shin and let go of the grip on the heel. Control the opponent's hips and complete the pass.
- For the leg weave pass, lean forward as much as you can and apply pressure with your shoulder on the opponent's belly. Your forehead should almost touch the mat. Pull the opponent's collar and try to mount on top. Slide your knee and follow with the other knee. Keep the pressure on the opponent's upper body to prevent them from framing.
Remember, the key to this technique is to maintain your balance and control the opponent's movements. Whether you choose to perform a long step pass or a leg weave pass depends on your preference and the opponent's reaction.
