Defending against the long step pass:

  1. When the opponent attempts a long step pass, use a frame to create distance.
  2. Instead of staying in place, aim to become like a ball, compact and difficult to control.
  3. If the bottom leg comes through, the opponent will try to control it. However, you still have one leg free. Use this leg to step on the opponent.
  4. Be careful not to let the free leg go over the opponent, as this will allow them to pass to the other side or connect a counter pass.
  5. Push against the opponent and position your leg in a way that allows you to go onto your knee. Use your toes in a butterfly position to facilitate this movement.
  6. Roll over onto your shoulder, using your toes for leverage.
  7. Drills are important for mastering this movement. Practice hip escapes and steps, and using your toes on the mat to roll over onto your shoulder.
  8. The same defense can be used against a crazy dog pass. When the opponent slides their knee, use your leg to go upside down and recompose.
  9. Always aim to control the distance on the bottom. If the opponent grabs your collar, break their grip. This should be your first reaction.
  10. Remember to block your head and keep the opponent away to avoid the pass. This is a fundamental aspect of Jiu-Jitsu.
