Defending against the long step pass:
- When the opponent attempts a long step pass, use a frame to create distance.
- Instead of staying in place, aim to become like a ball, compact and difficult to control.
- If the bottom leg comes through, the opponent will try to control it. However, you still have one leg free. Use this leg to step on the opponent.
- Be careful not to let the free leg go over the opponent, as this will allow them to pass to the other side or connect a counter pass.
- Push against the opponent and position your leg in a way that allows you to go onto your knee. Use your toes in a butterfly position to facilitate this movement.
- Roll over onto your shoulder, using your toes for leverage.
- Drills are important for mastering this movement. Practice hip escapes and steps, and using your toes on the mat to roll over onto your shoulder.
- The same defense can be used against a crazy dog pass. When the opponent slides their knee, use your leg to go upside down and recompose.
- Always aim to control the distance on the bottom. If the opponent grabs your collar, break their grip. This should be your first reaction.
- Remember to block your head and keep the opponent away to avoid the pass. This is a fundamental aspect of Jiu-Jitsu.
