About this video

Common mistakes made while executing the long step in BJJ are:

  1. Incorrect head placement: Many practitioners tend to place their head on the opponent's stomach during the long step. This gives the opponent an opportunity to push and create space or move their hips. The correct placement should be on the shoulder or at least on the upper part of the body, never below the chest.
  2. Incorrect hip movement: Another common mistake is sliding the hips on the mat and trying to tripod from this position. This makes the practitioner's frame weak and gives the opponent an opportunity to bring their knee in. The correct way is to lift the hips up before going into a tripod. This extends the opponent and weakens their frame, making it easier to push their leg down and open up space.
