About this video
The occurrence of a knee pop without any lasting damage is common, but it depends on the nature of the pop. Some pops are harmless, similar to cracking your back or knuckles, and are simply a release of pressure inside the joint. However, other pops can indicate trauma to a specific structure, such as a tear in the meniscus or MCL. In these cases, there will be lasting damage as the body recovers with scar tissue, which is not as strong as the original structure.
Despite this, with strength training and ensuring normal knee mechanics, range of motion, and strength, a similar type of bond to the original structure can be created. Strength training not only trains the muscles but also makes the ligaments and tendons more resilient to stress, creating durability within the scar tissue. Although the scar tissue technically damages the knee, it doesn't prevent you from operating at 100% or training without pain. Therefore, while there is lasting damage from such incidents, it's not always detrimental, and training can still continue.
