Thiago Barreto

Thiago Barreto Marques was born on December 5, 1984, in Brazil, and arrived at jiu-jitsu not through ambition but through necessity. Described by those close to him as a hyperactive child constantly running into trouble, his parents enrolled him in a local BJJ gym at the age of 14, hoping the discipline and physical demands of the sport would channel his excess energy constructively. The decision proved transformative.

At that gym, Barreto met Andrade Neto, the instructor who would guide him through every stage of his development from white belt to brown belt. Neto quickly recognized something exceptional in his young student. Barreto's natural aptitude for grappling set him apart early — while still a blue belt, he was already serving as an assistant instructor at Neto's side, a level of trust rarely extended to competitors so early in their training.

Jiu-jitsu rapidly became more than a recreational outlet. As a purple belt, Barreto co-founded his own academy — Academia One — alongside his brother Bruno Barreto, himself a well-known competitor. Opening a gym at purple belt level spoke volumes about Thiago's dedication to teaching and his conviction that jiu-jitsu was a lifelong pursuit, not merely a competitive endeavor.

Thiago Barreto earned his black belt in 2007 from professor Burtom Deivisom, a promotion anchored by the CBJJE World title he had claimed at brown belt — a result that demonstrated his readiness to compete and teach at the sport's highest level. The promotion opened a new chapter defined by consistent international performance despite the unconventional circumstances of his training environment.

Unlike many elite competitors who develop within large, resource-rich academies, Barreto continued to grow primarily alongside his students and his brother at Academia One. In 2011, he captured the CBJJO South American Cup title, and the following year added the IBJJF Rio International Open gold medal to his record. Also in 2011, Barreto announced himself on the global stage with a runner-up finish at the UAEJJF Abu Dhabi World Pro, one of the most competitive featherweight fields in international BJJ. The result confirmed what those close to him already knew: Barreto belonged among the best in the world.

Following his 2011 runner-up finish at the Abu Dhabi World Pro, Barreto returned the following year and claimed the championship in the -64 kg category, defeating Fernando Vieira by points in the final. The 2012 title was a breakthrough moment, validating years of work built outside the traditional elite academy structure.

In 2013, Barreto defended his status as the tournament's premier featherweight, winning the championship once again — this time finishing his opponent with a triangle submission. The performance highlighted both the depth of his technical game and his ability to secure victories in the most decisive fashion. That same year, he reinforced his consistency with a title at the UAEJJF World Pro Gramado Trials, underscoring his dominance across an entire competitive season.

Back-to-back titles at one of the toughest tournaments on the international BJJ circuit positioned Barreto as an elite-level featherweight by any measure. His Abu Dhabi World Pro victories attracted attention far beyond the competitive arena and would soon reshape the trajectory of his career entirely.

The recognition that followed Barreto's Abu Dhabi World Pro titles extended well beyond medals and rankings. Palm Sports, an agency responsible for recruiting grappling instructors for the United Arab Emirates public school system, took notice of his championship performances and extended an offer. After careful consideration, Barreto relocated to the UAE in 2014, beginning a new chapter as a professional BJJ coach far from the gym in Brazil where his journey had started.

Based in the UAE, Barreto did not step away from competition. In 2015, he returned to the Abu Dhabi World Pro and won the championship once more, adding a third title at the tournament to his record. That performance triggered a second major career opportunity: an invitation to join the coaching staff of Commando Group, one of the premier BJJ teams operating within the UAEJJF competitive structure, where Barreto would teach jiu-jitsu to UAE military personnel.

Barreto accepted the Commando Group position in 2015, and the affiliation proved a natural fit. He became one of the team's most prominent competitive representatives on the UAEJJF circuit, competing under the Commando Group banner while simultaneously contributing to the development of its coaching infrastructure.

As Barreto transitioned into the Master 1 division, his competitive output showed no signs of decline. He claimed Abu Dhabi World Pro Master 1 titles in 2016, 2017, and 2018 — three consecutive championships at the sport's most prestigious UAE-based event — placing him among the most decorated competitors in the tournament's history across both the open and Masters categories.

Beyond the Abu Dhabi World Pro, Barreto extended his dominance across the UAEJJF Grand Slam Tour circuit, winning the Master 1 division in Los Angeles in 2017 and claiming the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam title in both 2017 and 2018. The breadth of those victories, spanning multiple events and locations within the same competitive ecosystem, reflected a competitor operating at a sustained high level well into the Master 1 age bracket.

Competing throughout this period under the Commando Group banner, Barreto became one of the defining figures of the team's identity on the UAEJJF circuit. His career arc — from a restless teenager enrolled in BJJ to channel his energy, to a self-driven purple belt running his own academy in Brazil, to a multiple-time international champion coaching jiu-jitsu to UAE military personnel — stands as one of the more distinctive journeys the sport has produced.
