Born on July 4, 1979, in São Paulo, Brazil, Tiago Alves built a remarkably diverse athletic foundation long before he ever stepped onto the BJJ mats. He pursued martial arts with enough dedication to earn a black belt in Kung Fu, while simultaneously competing as a surfer and triathlon athlete — a combination that forged the physical conditioning and competitive mentality that would later define his grappling career.

Alves was 20 years old when he first encountered Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, introduced to the art by Kung Fu training partner Francisco Lenhador, who invited him to his martial arts academy to stay active. The introduction was almost accidental — Alves noticed some of the academy's members grappling, asked if he could join, and found himself rolling before he had much time to consider it. His initial impression of BJJ was far from positive. He disliked the grappling itself at first and was put off by the "pit boy" stigma that clung to BJJ in Brazil during that era — a reputation born from the violent misuse of the art by certain gang members that cast a long shadow over the sport.

Despite his ambivalence, Francisco Lenhador recognized almost immediately that his Kung Fu friend possessed a natural gift for grappling. Acting on that instinct, Lenhador guided Alves toward a more structured BJJ environment — a school run by an instructor named Gomes. Alves trained there for four months, but the limited number of training partners available at his schedule left him wanting more competition on the mat. That search for a more populated and professional academy led him to Barbosa Jiu-Jitsu, helmed by Marco Barbosa, and the course of his athletic life changed permanently.

Alves's development under Marco Barbosa — affectionately known as "Barbosinha" — accelerated rapidly once he found a stable home at Barbosa Jiu-Jitsu. Upon reaching blue belt, Alves enrolled at Unisantana University in São Paulo to pursue a degree in Physical Education. The program opened the door to a BJJ scholarship, allowing him to train consistently and systematically under Barbosa's guidance without interruption — an arrangement that proved pivotal to his competitive rise.

His record at the lower belt levels was exceptional enough to earn him an expedited path to the sport's highest rank. In November 2004, just over five years after first stepping onto the mats, Marco Barbosa awarded Alves his black belt — a timeline that reflects both natural talent and an extraordinary competitive output during his formative years at the academy.

Black Belt Achievements

At the elite level, Alves excelled across both the Lightweight (76 kg) and Middleweight (82 kg) divisions. He claimed gold at the IBJJF Pan Championship in 2006 and added a CBJJE South American Championship title in 2008. He reached the peak of domestic competition with a CBJJ Brazilian Nationals title in 2010 — a year in which he also won the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals NoGi for the second consecutive time, having first claimed that title in 2009. His silver medal at the IBJJF World Championship NoGi in 2010 further underscored his standing among the best grapplers on the international circuit during that period.

By 2012, Tiago Alves had redirected his competitive focus almost entirely toward mixed martial arts, leveraging a rare dual black belt pedigree in both Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Kung Fu to build a well-rounded professional fighting profile. Continuing to operate out of Barbosa Jiu-Jitsu — one of São Paulo's most respected martial arts academies — Alves brought a technically diverse game to the cage, blending the grappling depth earned under Marco Barbosa with the striking foundation developed through years of Kung Fu training.

His profile received a significant boost through his appearance on The Ultimate Fighter Brazil Season 2, which brought national television exposure and introduced him to a broader audience beyond the competition circuit. Fighting under the nickname "Unstoppable," Alves embodied an aggressive competitive approach that aligned with the relentless physical conditioning he had cultivated since his years as a triathlete and surfer.
