Aniel Bonifacio

Aniel Bonifacio was born on April 11, 1996, in Brazil, and came to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu not through a traditional academy, but through a community social project designed to engage the youth of his neighborhood. At age 14, he stepped onto the mats for the first time under the instruction of local black belt Rodrigo Carvalho, who served as the program's resident instructor.

Carvalho's lineage traces through a distinguished line of BJJ practitioners — from Fernando 'Pinduka' to Leonardo Castello Branco, then to Paulo Rezende, and ultimately to Carvalho himself — a heritage that Bonifacio inherited upon his own promotion. Training under a technically grounded instructor from the outset gave Bonifacio a strong foundation, and he quickly established himself as one of the region's most promising young competitors.

Despite entering the sport later than many elite grapplers, his progress was swift and deliberate. By purple belt, Bonifacio had already committed to pursuing competition professionally — a decision that would define his development and distinguish him within Brazil's competitive BJJ landscape.

Bonifacio forged his path to the black belt through years of consistent competition on Brazil's demanding national circuit. Competing in the Peso Galo division — 57.5 kg / 127 lbs — one of the most technically rigorous weight classes in the sport, he built his competitive résumé at the purple and brown belt levels between 2014 and 2016.

During this period, he earned multiple podium appearances at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals and the IBJJF South American Championship, demonstrating steady improvement and competitive reliability. A bronze medal at the 2016 IBJJF European Open as a brown belt signaled that his ambitions extended well beyond Brazil — he tested himself against international competition and performed with credibility on that larger stage.

The sustained effort across these years culminated in his black belt promotion in January 2017, awarded by longtime coach Rodrigo Carvalho. The promotion marked formal recognition of a career built through disciplined mat work and competitive experience rather than shortcuts.

Immediate Impact at Black Belt

Aniel Bonifacio wasted no time making his mark at black belt. In 2017, he claimed gold at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals Championship — an emphatic opening statement in the most competitive chapter of his career. That same year, he added back-to-back titles at the IBJJF Belo Horizonte Summer Open and the IBJJF Belo Horizonte Winter Open, reinforcing his consistency across different competitive formats and conditions.

Cementing Elite Status

The momentum carried into 2018, when Bonifacio captured gold at the 2018 IBJJF South American Championship, cementing his standing among the top roosterweight competitors of his generation. Coming on the heels of his 2017 national title, the South American championship confirmed that his early black belt success reflected genuine elite-level capability rather than circumstance.

His international footprint expanded further in 2019, when he earned a bronze medal at the 2019 IBJJF European Open, demonstrating competitive reach well beyond South America. That appearance also marked a notable shift in his career trajectory: while Bonifacio had been promoted to black belt under Rodrigo Carvalho JJ, he competed at the 2019 European Championship representing Qatar BJJ Brasil, reflecting a natural evolution in team association as his professional career continued to grow.
