Letícia Ribeiro dos Santos

Letícia Ribeiro was born on February 24, 1979, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and went on to become one of the most accomplished female competitors in the history of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Her path to the sport was unconventional — not driven by a lifelong passion for martial arts, but by a practical desire to get fit. Finding weight lifting unappealing, she accepted a friend's invitation to try BJJ at age 15, a decision that would define the entire course of her life.

She began training at Gracie Tijuca, an affiliate of Gracie Humaitá, under the guidance of Arthur Carthiar and Marcelo Machado. The academy's rotating roster of high-level instructors exposed her to some of the sport's most respected figures, including Saulo Ribeiro, Royler Gracie, and Vini Aieta. It was Royler Gracie and Vini Aieta who ultimately promoted Letícia to black belt, recognizing both her technical mastery and the weight of her competitive résumé.

Letícia Ribeiro's competitive record stands as one of the most decorated in women's BJJ history. Competing in the light feather division at 53.50 kg, she accumulated 9 IBJJF World Championship titles across more than a decade of elite competition. Confirmed title years include 2000, 2002, 2006, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012, with two additional championships rounding out her remarkable total.

Her dominance extended well beyond the gi. Letícia claimed 2 IBJJF World No-Gi Championship titles, in 2008 and 2010, demonstrating the adaptability and depth of her technical game across formats. She further reinforced her elite status with IBJJF Pan American Championship victories in both 2003 and 2004, cementing her place as the standard-bearer for women's competition in the light feather division.

Perhaps the most telling testament to her competitive hunger came in 2009, when Letícia stepped away from competition to dedicate herself fully to coaching. The retirement proved short-lived. She returned to the mats in 2010 and captured yet another world title — a statement that underscored not only her enduring ability, but the depth of her connection to the sport.

Following her competitive peak, Letícia channeled her championship experience into building one of the most respected women's BJJ programs in the sport. Her women's Jiu-Jitsu camp earned wide recognition as a premier training environment for female competitors, drawing athletes seeking both technical refinement and exposure to championship-level coaching.

Her relocation to San Diego, California, followed a path well-worn by Gracie Humaitá luminaries — among them Royler Gracie, the Ribeiro brothers, and Vinny Magalhães — all of whom had made similar moves to the United States in the years prior. San Diego provided Letícia with a broader platform to expand her coaching reach and contribute to the growth of women's competitive BJJ across North America.

It was through the BJJ community that Letícia met her partner, Fabricio Camoes, known in the grappling world as "Morango." Together, their involvement in the sport reflects a shared dedication to Jiu-Jitsu that extends far beyond competition. Letícia's coaching legacy represents a meaningful contribution to the evolution of women's grappling, with her programs helping to raise the competitive standard at both national and international levels.
