Felicia Oh was born on December 13, 1967, in Seattle, Washington, where she spent her formative years before relocating to Los Angeles to pursue graduate studies at UCLA. After completing her academic tenure, she settled permanently in the city, making Los Angeles the backdrop for both her professional and athletic life.

Throughout her life, Oh maintained a deep connection to sport and physical activity. In 1999 and 2000, she channeled that energy into outdoor pursuits — training for the Los Angeles Marathon and spending time camping. The 1999–2000 rainy season, battered by tropical storms, proved to be a pivotal disruption. Severe weather derailed her marathon preparation and cut short a camping trip, forcing an early return home. It was during that drive back that a friend mentioned Brazilian jiu-jitsu in conversation — a casual exchange that would permanently alter the course of her life.

With her outdoor calendar shuttered by the weather, Oh was drawn to an indoor discipline that could channel her competitive energy year-round. In November 2000, she walked through the doors of Jean Jacques Machado's academy in Tarzana, California, and signed up. What began as a practical solution to a rainy season would grow into one of the most accomplished careers in American women's jiu-jitsu history.

Felicia Oh's early development at the Jean Jacques Machado Academy was shaped in large part by Silvio "Silverado" Pimenta, who served as the beginners' instructor and guided her through the foundational stages of training. Under Pimenta's instruction, Oh built the technical base and competitive confidence that eventually earned her a place in the advanced class taught by Jean Jacques Machado himself — a transition that marked a significant step forward in her growth as a practitioner.

Progressing through every belt rank under Machado's direct tutelage, Oh demonstrated a commitment to the art that extended well beyond casual participation. In June 2005, at the age of 37, she received her black belt from Jean Jacques Machado — a milestone that resonated far beyond the personal. The promotion placed her sixth among women outside Brazil to earn a BJJ black belt, and fifth within the United States, earning her a place in the Women's BJJ Dirty Dozen — a distinction reserved for the trailblazing women who broke into the art's upper echelons before it became widely accessible.

Alongside her work under Machado, Oh trained with Eddie Bravo from approximately 2003 to 2007, immersing herself in his unorthodox 10th Planet system and reaching the brown belt/rashguard level within that framework. The dual training path reflected both her intellectual curiosity about grappling and her willingness to explore approaches that diverged from conventional BJJ methodology.

The year 2007 stands as the pinnacle of Felicia Oh's competitive career — a sustained run of elite performances delivered at the age of 39 that placed her among the finest grapplers of her generation. Competing in the featherweight division, she opened the year by claiming the Pan American Championship title in both gi and no-gi formats, a double that underscored her technical versatility and competitive composure across different rulesets.

Later that year, she added a third-place finish at the gi World Championship and reached the final of the No-Gi World Championship, taking the silver medal. Each result, taken individually, would represent a career highlight for most competitors. Collectively, they set the stage for what came next.

The ADCC Run

The crown jewel of her season came at the ADCC World Submission Wrestling Championship. On her path to the final, Oh defeated two figures of immense stature in grappling: Leticia Ribeiro, a multiple-time world champion whose submission wrestling credentials were beyond dispute, and Megumi Fujii, one of the most feared submission artists in women's combat sports. In the final, Oh faced Sayaka Shioda and finished as the silver medalist — a result that nonetheless completed one of the most comprehensive competitive seasons women's BJJ had seen to that point.

Her journalism career began with ADCombat, the official website of the ADCC organization, where she developed the writing and editorial instincts that would carry her into broadcast work. Through her friendship with Kenny Jewel, Oh became one of the founding on-camera personalities at GrappleTV, stepping in front of the cameras around 2004 and 2005 — an era when video coverage of grappling was still a nascent and largely uncharted medium.

For approximately two years, Oh served as an interviewer and presenter for GrappleTV, gaining access to some of the most prominent names in the California grappling scene and giving the platform a recognizable and credible face. When she relocated around 2007, she passed the role to Cindy Omatsu, leaving behind a body of work that documented a formative period in American jiu-jitsu media.

For two years, Oh pushed through the illness with characteristic determination, attempting to maintain her training despite the physical toll. The virus, however, proved unrelenting, and the fatigue it produced made meaningful competition preparation increasingly difficult to sustain. Eventually, she made the decision to step away from the sport — a conclusion that, given the trajectory of her career, represented a significant interruption.

The hiatus lasted several years, but in 2014, Oh made her return to competition at the IBJJF World Masters Championship. The result was unambiguous: she captured the title, closing the difficult chapter of her absence with a gold medal and reaffirming the technical foundations that had made her one of the most decorated American women in BJJ history.
