Marcelo Machado

Marcelo Machado's relationship with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu began at an extraordinary age — just four years old — when his father enrolled him in the art. A Cardiologist and General Practitioner by profession, his father had witnessed Helio Gracie's vale tudo challenge matches in Rio de Janeiro firsthand, and the effectiveness of Jiu-Jitsu left a lasting impression that would ultimately define his son's life trajectory.

Marcelo trained at the Kioto Academy in Rio de Janeiro under Francisco Mansur, a 9th degree red belt who had received his credentials directly from Helio Gracie. The Kioto Academy instilled a rigorous technical foundation, and by age 15, Marcelo had earned his fourth degree yellow belt under Mansur's guidance — a testament to both the quality of instruction and his own dedication to the art.

The turning point in Marcelo's development arrived at age 15, when a close friend began training under a then-20-year-old Royler Gracie and spoke of the experience with unwavering enthusiasm. Persuaded that he had to see for himself, Marcelo convinced his father to arrange private training sessions. Those sessions took place at Royler's home in Copacabana, marking the start of a formative and enduring student-teacher relationship.

For the next six years, Marcelo maintained a dual training structure — attending group classes at Kioto under Francisco Mansur while simultaneously receiving private instruction from Royler Gracie. At age 21, holding the rank of brown belt, he made the full transition to Gracie Humaita, committing entirely to Royler's program.

Two years later, still as a brown belt, Marcelo resolved to pursue teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a profession. In 1995, after approximately 21 years of continuous training, Royler Gracie personally awarded him the black belt — a milestone that recognized both his technical mastery and his meaningful contributions to the art.

Establishing the Academy

Before receiving his black belt, Marcelo had already taken one of the most consequential steps of his career. As a brown belt, he sought and received special permission from Royler Gracie to use the Gracie name for his own school — an honor extended to very few individuals outside the Gracie family itself. Marcelo founded Gracie Tijuca in 1994, establishing it in the Tijuca borough of Rio de Janeiro, the neighborhood where he lived.

The academy announced its ambitions from the outset. Its training space measured 250 square meters, making it one of the largest mats in Brazil at the time. The initial instructor team paired Marcelo with Arthur Carthiar, a 3rd degree black belt from Gracie Humaita, whose competitive experience added immediate depth to the school's program.

Building a Championship Environment

In 1998, Arthur Carthiar departed the academy to join the police force. His role was filled by Vini Aieta, a black belt under Royler Gracie, who joined Gracie Tijuca as co-instructor. The teaching staff grew significantly stronger in 2000 when world champion Saulo Ribeiro joined the team, raising the competitive standard and the overall quality of instruction.

The combination of Marcelo, Vini Aieta, and Saulo Ribeiro proved exceptionally productive. Among the notable fighters developed during this period were Leticia Ribeiro, who began her training at Gracie Tijuca in 1995, Vinny Magalhães, Cristiano Marcelo, Fabricio Camoes, and Sergio Lourenco — a roster that affirmed the academy's standing as one of Rio de Janeiro's most prestigious BJJ institutions.

In 2003, Marcelo stepped away from Gracie Tijuca to pursue a professional career in law, closing a chapter that had cemented his legacy as one of the sport's most influential academy builders.

Origins and Identity

Alongside his work on the mats, Marcelo made an equally significant contribution to the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu industry by co-founding a gi company with his sister, Luciana Machado (Simon). Launched in 1995, the brand debuted under the name Herculys Kimonos — a name derived from "Hercules" — before being renamed Machado Kimonos, the identity under which it earned widespread recognition across the BJJ world.

The brand's iconic logo features an "M" shaped in the form of a double-bladed axe, a deliberate reference to the Portuguese word machado, meaning axe. The visual identity was immediately distinctive, and the kimonos quickly became a mark of quality within the competitive community.

High-Profile Partnerships

From the beginning, Machado Kimonos attracted some of the sport's most prominent athletes. Royler Gracie, Relson Gracie, Saulo Ribeiro, Vitor Ribeiro, Robson Moura, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Ricardo Liborio, and Murilo Bustamante were among the notable names who wore Machado gis. The company's reach extended to team partnerships as well, with both Gracie Humaita and Gracie Barra selecting Machado Kimonos to manufacture their official team gis at various points in their histories. The prominent Brazilian brand Vitamins and Minerals also contracted Marcelo and Luciana to produce their official kimonos.

Marcelo's contributions to the gi industry went beyond brand building — he introduced two fabric innovations that fundamentally changed what practitioners could expect from their training uniforms.

In 1996, he developed the summer weave, a lighter construction specifically engineered to allow athletes to train comfortably during Brazil's most intense heat. The weave addressed a genuine practical need that had long gone unmet by existing fabrics, and its reception within the competitive community confirmed the demand for climate-conscious gi design.

In 2001, Marcelo introduced what would become perhaps his most enduring technical contribution: the hybrid weave. Conceived through careful study of both the single weave and the double weave, the hybrid combined the strengths of each construction while minimizing their respective drawbacks. It delivered greater strength and durability than a single weave, while remaining less bulky, heavy, and hot than a double weave. The hybrid weave became one of Machado Kimonos' most popular and enduring products, standing as clear evidence that Marcelo's innovative influence extended well beyond the competitive arena.

Marcelo's departure from Gracie Tijuca in 2003 marked a profound transition. Choosing to pursue a professional career in law, he stepped back from the sport that had defined him since childhood. The shift was compounded by back injuries sustained during his years of training, which kept him away from active practice for an extended period.

In 2010, Marcelo returned to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, resuming training after nearly a decade away from the mats. The return spoke to a commitment to the art that had remained constant throughout his life — from his first lessons at the Kioto Academy as a four-year-old, through the championship years at Gracie Tijuca, and into the decades that followed.
