Kauan Barboza

Kauan Barboza was born on May 7, 1996, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil — a city whose vibrant sporting culture left a lasting imprint on his early development. Like many Brazilian children of his generation, Barboza's athletic identity was built almost entirely around football (soccer), the sport that consumed his childhood passion and attention.

The turn toward martial arts came in his early teens, when a growing curiosity for combat sports drew him toward judo. He approached his parents about enrolling in a judo club, eager to pursue the Japanese discipline. His father's social circle, however, steered the path in a different direction. A close friendship with Ari 'Galo' — a well-regarded Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and established instructor within the Carlson Gracie Academy network — led Barboza's father to enroll his son at his friend's gym instead. That decision, made with little fanfare, set the foundation for a distinguished career on the mats.

Under Ari 'Galo''s guidance, jiu-jitsu proved to be a natural fit for Barboza. What began as a redirect away from judo quickly became a defining pursuit.

Barboza's development as a competitor accelerated rapidly within the Carlson Gracie Academy system, where he trained under both Ari 'Galo' and Leonardo Vieira. The quality of instruction and competitive environment shaped him into one of the most decorated young grapplers of his generation in Brazil.

His juvenile career signaled early that Barboza possessed an exceptional competitive instinct. In 2013, he captured gold at the IBJJF World Championship in the juvenile division and added an absolute bronze medal at the same event — a performance that placed him among the sport's most promising teenage prospects. Silver medals at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals in both 2012 and 2013 further demonstrated his consistency at the highest levels of domestic competition.

As Barboza progressed to purple belt, his trajectory only steepened. A gold medal at the 2014 IBJJF Rio Open preceded back-to-back silver medals at the IBJJF World Championship as a purple belt in 2014 and 2016. Those consecutive podium finishes were more than impressive results — they reflected the technical proficiency, consistency, and mental fortitude that would come to define his professional career.

In 2015, Barboza — competing as a purple belt — traveled to North America alongside teammate Alexandre Molinaro for the IBJJF No-Gi World and Pan Championships. The trip proved far more consequential than a pair of tournament appearances. During their time in the United States, both athletes crossed paths with André 'Alemão' Vasconcelos, a fellow Carlson Gracie member and gym owner who recognized their potential and extended an offer that would reshape both of their careers.

Vasconcelos offered to sponsor Barboza and Molinaro, helping them establish themselves in the country and compete year-round on the IBJJF's most competitive North American circuit. Both athletes accepted, and Barboza wasted little time making his presence known on the American competition scene.

The partnership with André 'Alemão' Vasconcelos extended well beyond sponsorship. Under Alemão's guidance, Barboza earned his brown belt and, subsequently, his black belt — with the black belt promotion ceremony taking place on June 5, 2017. That milestone marked a pivotal turning point, elevating Barboza from a highly regarded colored belt prospect to a recognized professional competitor on the international stage.

Barboza's emergence as a black belt competitor was swift and decisive. Competing at Peso Leve (76 kg / 168 lbs), he translated the technical versatility and competitive sharpness of his colored belt years into an impressive record on the North American IBJJF circuit.

His debut year as a black belt in 2017 produced a gold medal at the SJJIF World Championship, bronze finishes at the 2017 IBJJF Dallas Fall Open and 2017 IBJJF Miami Fall Open, and a gold at the 2017 IBJJF NY Summer Open — a productive inaugural campaign that set the tone for what was to come.

Barboza's most dominant stretch arrived in 2018, when he assembled one of the most prolific open tournament runs on the circuit. He captured gold at the 2018 IBJJF Atlanta Summer Open, the 2018 IBJJF Chicago Summer Open in both gi and no-gi formats, the 2018 IBJJF Nashville Fall Open, the 2018 IBJJF Los Angeles Open, and the 2018 IBJJF Seattle Open. The breadth of that campaign — spanning multiple regions and both formats — highlighted his adaptability and underscored his standing as one of the division's most consistent performers.

Carrying that momentum into 2019, Barboza added gold medals at the 2019 IBJJF Fresno Open and 2019 IBJJF Phoenix Open, along with silver finishes at the 2019 IBJJF Long Beach Open and 2019 IBJJF Miami Winter Open, and a bronze at the 2019 IBJJF San Jose Open. Across those years, Barboza built an extensive record that reflected his ability to perform at a high level across geographies, formats, and competitive conditions.

While competing in the United States, Barboza cultivated deep personal connections at Checkmat Headquarters in California — bonds that bridged the gap between his competitive identity and his long-term home in the sport. Among those connections was a relationship that led to marriage with a member of the Checkmat team, intertwining his personal life with the organization in the most meaningful of ways.

As those ties deepened, Barboza entered discussions with André 'Alemão' Vasconcelos about formally affiliating with Checkmat and relocating to the US West Coast. Vasconcelos — who had guided Barboza's development from purple belt through black belt — offered his full support for the transition, a testament to the mutual respect built over years of collaboration.

Barboza was welcomed into Checkmat by team leader Leonardo 'Leozinho' Vieira, whose endorsement reflected the strong community ethos at the heart of the organization.
