Almeida eventually relocated to New York alongside Renzo Gracie to help establish Renzo's school in the United States. Shortly after arriving, Renzo awarded him his black belt — a milestone that carried profound historical weight. Almeida became Renzo Gracie's first black belt, placing him at the foundational link of a lineage that would go on to produce countless accomplished practitioners across BJJ and MMA.

Ricardo Almeida built his reputation as one of the elite grapplers of his generation through a string of standout performances on the international circuit. Competing in the Meio Pesado (88kg) division, he captured CBJJ Brazilian Nationals titles at both purple belt in 1996 and brown belt in 1997, demonstrating consistent excellence across belt levels. He added to those credentials by winning the IBJJF Pan American Championship at brown belt in 1999.

His most celebrated grappling achievements came at the ADCC World Championships, where he medaled in three consecutive appearances — a remarkable run of consistency at the sport's most prestigious no-gi event. He earned a silver medal at the 1998 ADCC World Championship in the -99kg division, followed by a bronze medal at the 1999 ADCC World Championship in the same weight class. He then closed the run with a bronze medal at the 2000 ADCC World Championship in the openweight division, demonstrating his ability to compete effectively against opponents of all sizes.
